Dean Dirks also discusses future plans including innovative educational models, fostering business community relationships, and leveraging unique economic opportunities in Utah, such as the 2034 Winter Olympics. This episode provides an in-depth look at the exciting growth and future ambitions of the Eccles School as it aims to become the premier business education institution in the West. Learn more at https://podcast.feedspot.com/us_business_school_podcasts.  Episode Quotes: Dean Kurt on why the university’s three strategic goals stood out [08:32] We can be stronger and more successful if our priorities are aligned with the university's priorities. On ensuring our impact lasts for generations [10:05] We are coming up on our 110th year as a school in a few years. We have a very proud legacy of helping to have that societal impact and helping students over time, and we want to make sure that that continues long into the future to ensure that we have that pride of our students and alumni, that they are carrying the flag with them as they go out into the world, that we have the financial strength to be able to achieve those goals, and that we have the reputation that matches our quality. I think that's one of the things that have come to discover is that we have an amazing campus here and a university here, and that we need to make sure the rest of the world knows about that. The implementation phase: executing internally and creating new opportunities externally. [17:31] Another area that we're looking at is how to create some programs which are, again, helping to fit and fuel the Utah economy and there's a number of them that we are looking at there. One of the ones which I'm excited about with the Olympics coming as well as all the pro sports teams here, as well as creating the sports and entertainment district downtown. I think there's a great opportunity for us to do something around the business of sports. And so, I've been in conversations with a number of our leaders throughout the community about what that might look like. What types of relationships might we build, what type of opportunities out there are there to get our students involved in this very exciting era of our community. Dean Kurt opens up about the unexpected insights from his first year in leadership. [13:10] We're going to lean heavily into the concept of students are not coming here just to get a degree, but they're coming here to not only learn business but also to experience business. So, we're going to lean into a model which is really all around learning through experience. And that is in the classroom in various ways. It's not just listening to a lecture and taking a test. It's really learning through experience and really absorbing the information, discovering what that means for themselves. I learned that happens in the classroom as well as how it also goes beyond the classroom. So, students are out there doing projects with businesses which have real meaning, real consequences, as well as the internships. That's the first concept. And part of that student success priority is how do we bring that to light? We're doing a lot of it already, I have to say. And that's what so impressed me. And so, this is really taking that to the next level of how we fully integrate into it to make sure that our students are prepared for how business can evolve and change in the future and to be able to help them achieve success right away when they're going to and be at a competitive advantage compared to their peers who are going to other institutions. So, what does that look like for all of our students? The other pieces that we're also looking at then is how we create ensure access so that students desire and opportunities are not hindered by anything that they bring to the school in terms of their economics or background or anything else that we want all students to be able to, again, seek and reach their peak. And so, making sure that we are placed for access to do that. And we've had, you know, so many alumni and supporters come on to make sure that that happens. S8E9: Creating Connections: Alumni and Eccles’ Strategic Vision feat. Paige Erickson and Nick Marsh

Season 8 continues with our conversations about the new strategic direction at the David Eccles School of Business with a particular focus on the third pillar of the strategic plan: reputation and legacy.  Paige Erickson is the chair of the Eccles Advisory Board. She works as a strategic consultant, board member, and board leader. Nick Marsh is the chair of the David Eccles Alumni Network Board. He works as a financial advisor with the Mikolos Group at Morgan Stanley. Both Nick and Paige share insights on how alumni can contribute through mentorship, internships, and other forms of involvement, emphasizing the personal and professional benefits of staying connected to the Eccles community. Additionally, they highlight the transformative power of higher education and the ongoing efforts to create opportunities for current and future students. Learn more at https://podcast.feedspot.com/us_business_school_podcasts.  Episode Quotes: Giving back is a gift for students and a reward for yourself. [7:55] Nick Marsh:The goal of going, I think we're somewhere in the thirties right now, but if we are able to achieve getting to the top 10, the value of that degree goes up. You have the ability to change the outlook of not only the students but yourself as well. You can make your degree more powerful, and open more doors for yourself. I remember when I was in college, I thought I had no time.  And then now that I'm a father of three and I'm like a full-time working stiff, I have found that I truly have no time now, but I still have the ability to chair this board and give back to the U in as many ways because I spent a whole lot of time at the U and I tried really hard to get my degree and I have the ability to make it worth more than what it was when I graduated in 2013. And you could do that with mentoring and, using your time to give back to the business school. What keeps our alumni tethered to the school? [10:38]  I think the number one thing that I hear from almost everybody is that the opportunities that they had at the school to get a degree and then the following career changed their life. I know that was my case, right? I went there. I was on scholarship. And then I was able to launch a really successful career because of the University of Utah and also because people cared about me when I was there. I really do think most of us feel like it helped us and we want to give back. I think that's number one. I think another interesting fact is that a lot of the members who are on the advisory board have either got children or grandchildren, even, at the U. And so, they're also hearing, really, current information. And so, they have, really, relevant experience that they're getting, either back through their kids or grandkids or friends and family, you know, that also have students at the U today. So, I think that they are current, more than you'd think, with what's going on at the school. And they do participate heavily. How staying connected to the university benefited alums like Nick [14:43] Nick Marsh: I get the ability to meet people at Google,  Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, and Adobe, all the big companies around the valley that I want to meet. And so my network has gotten to grow [and] has bloomed because I have been active at the U. It's worked out really well that our school's gotten much more powerful. Paige shares what alums can do now to support students [18:13] Paige Erickson:  I do think the main thing that we need to do more of is provide internships [and] real opportunities for students. Because what I've seen is many of these kids graduate, and they have all the technical skills in accounting or marketing, but they don't have relevant experience. And what business wants is both, they want them to be technically capable, but also to have the experience and the ability to work on projects and work on teams and collaborate together and not just have the core skills. So, I think that's another way people can provide ways because we don't have a lot of huge businesses in Salt Lake, but we have lots of small businesses. Giving them an opportunity to figure out a way that they can help students get experience, I think would be a really good way for alumni at any company to think about how they could help the youth. S8E8: Investing in Future Leaders: The Strategic Role of Quantitative Skills feat. Scott Schaefer

Season 8 continues with our conversations about the new strategic direction at the David Eccles School of Business with a particular focus on the third pillar of the new strategic plan: reputation and legacy.  Scott Schaefer is a chair and professor in the division of Quantitative Analysis of Markets and Organizations (QAMO) at the Marriner S Eccles Institute for Economics and Quantitative Analysis.  Frances and Scott discuss the legacy of Mariner S. Eccles, the goals of the Institute, and the importance of quantitative skills in business education. Scott elaborates on how the QAMO major equips students with analytical, strategic, and market understanding, preparing them for diverse career paths. Scott also touches upon the societal impact of the institute, the crucial role of faculty research, and the aspirations to position the David Eccles School of Business among the top 10 public business schools by the year 2030. Eccles Business Buzz is a production of the David Eccles School of Business and is produced by University.fm. Eccles Business Buzz is proud to be selected by FeedSpot as one of the Top 70 Business School podcasts on the web. Learn more at https://podcast.feedspot.com/us_business_school_podcasts.  Episode Quotes: 3 focal points of the QAMO program [03:55] What we focus on in our program is taking the parts of economics that are really applicable to business decision-making and showing those to undergraduate students and giving them those skills. We like to say we focus on three things in that program. We focus on how markets work. We focus on how to think strategically and how to analyze data. The importance of having quantitative skills [11:57] Frances Johnson: Do you think that sometimes quantitative skills get a little de-emphasized, and why are those skills just as important? Talk about the package and why these quantitative skills have to be as much a part of a successful business education. [13:54] Scott Schaefer: If you're going to rise and lead and really understand all the pieces of an organization, you've got to have the whole package. Not that everybody needs to be [a] calculus genius, but if you don't have quantitative skills enough to understand what the quantitative people in your organization are saying to you, then you know they're going to mislead you for their own purposes, and you're going to run that train right off the tracks. So, I think that the people I've met tend to be incredibly well-rounded. They don't have to be great at everything, but they have to be good enough at everything. It's a very complicated skill set needed to run a business effectively. And I think we should hold business decision-making in higher regard because it's incredibly complicated and also important. How the Marriner S. Eccles Institute is shaping the reputation and legacy of our school [18:04] You know, one of the ways that students could become, for example, the CEO of an S&P 500 company would be to start a career in consulting, transition at some point to that client, and then work their way up through that company. And so, it would be great to have alumni in positions like that, you know, leading the largest companies in the United States. We've had alumni have that career trajectory before. Would be great to have more, to give those opportunities to students. And I think that will increase the prominence of our institution. That's the kind of thing that top 10 public business schools do. And I think we're on the path to getting there. With regard to the reputation of the place, more broadly, outside of just what our alumni do, you know, we've hired outstanding faculty as part of the Marriner S. Eccles Institute. That's a big part of what the original gift was designed to do—to help us build a faculty. And our professors are doing really outstanding economics research that's building our reputation within academia. And so, we have our target set firmly on the top public business schools. You know, we look at a place like Berkeley or Michigan or Indiana or UCLA, and we're looking at who their faculty are and what kind of research they're producing and the societal impact of that research. That's what we're after. And we're really in the process of hitting that mark. Our faculty has really hit their stride over the last few years. And we're very excited for the future. S8E7: Introducing A Scientific Approach to Value Creation feat. Todd Zenger and Teppo Felin

Season 8 continues with our conversations about the new strategic direction at the David Eccles School: societal impact.  Todd Zenger is the N. Eldon Tanner Chair in Strategy and Strategic Leadership and Presidential Professor at the David Eccles School of Business  and Teppo Felin is the Douglas D. Anderson Endowed Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University.  Todd, and Teppo discuss their collaborative efforts to encourage a scientific approach to management and entrepreneurship. Together with host Frances Johnson, they explore how this novel methodology replaces conventional wisdom with a structured, theory-driven process for value creation, using examples like AirBnB and SpaceX. Their discussion underscores the significance of contrarian thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the potential for extensive societal impact. Episode Quotes: On using a scientific approach and testing their own theory. [11:53] People, particularly entrepreneurs, are given a treatment where they're encouraged to, sort of, develop theories and then engage in experimentation that's, sort of, consistent with those theories and interpret the results of those experiments in a way that's consistent with the theories. And what they find is better outcomes for those that have been treated with this kind of theory treatment, or they also find that they're also more likely to pivot, that is, to shut down something that's really flawed because they recognize that it's actually inconsistent with [the] theory that they have. The hypotheses aren't confirmed as opposed to an alternative approach, which is sort of [to] tell them to fail fast and just keep trying things until it works. And the problem is that that isn't very resource-efficient experimentation, right? You can experiment till you're blue in the face trying to find a peak out there that's valuable, but unless you have a theory to guide you there, it's actually likely to be a long and arduous process. So we've outsourced in many ways the empirical piece of this, but we're thrilled at the current findings. Solving more than business problems: An interdisciplinary initiative [34:07] Todd and I have published, I don't know, 20 something articles over the last dozen years together but we've also collaborated with people in cognitive science. We've worked with a complexity scientist, Stuart Kauffman at the Santa Fe Institute and others. And so there's definitely, this is an interdisciplinary initiative where we're building on insights from other disciplines and then also trying to leverage it into other spaces as well. So for me, absolutely, this is an interdisciplinary initiative. and places like the University of Utah are fantastic research institutions that have the breadth and depth of all these different disciplines and areas. Todd and Teppo aim to drive a meaningful impact on society through their work. [36:30] What we're basically teaching is [that] people should be thinking about the process of value creation and creating contrarian future states in a scientific way that has application to essentially economic development; it has application to solving social problems; it has application to solving medical problems; [and] obviously, entrepreneurship. We see the potential for massive societal impact where in some sense, playing with and trying to sort of teach the architecture and try to create an intervention, an engine that helps really solve a whole set of problems that people are grappling with. And in that sense, we hope that the impact on society is enormous. Show Links:Todd Zenger | LinkedInTodd Zenger | David Eccles School of BusinessTeppo Felin | LinkedInTeppo Felin | Jon M.
