    Representation and Power: Who Gets to Shape the World? Rethinking Everything Ep. 7

    What does representation really mean? It is easy to reduce representation to numbers. How many women are in parliament?How diverse is a boardroom?Who holds leadership positions? Those questions matter. But representation is much bigger than who gets a seat at the table. It is also about which experiences enter the room, which ways of thinking are given authority, which realities remain invisible, and who eventually has to live with the consequences of the decisions being made. In this episode of Rethinking Everything with Verdandi Weaver, I follow power beyond parliament into finance, corporations, international institutions, security, war, religion, technology and other places where decisions shape our shared world. And throughout the episode, I return to questions that are becoming part of the compass behind this entire series: What is the purpose? What is the tool? Who is in the room? Who is missing? Who gets to choose? Who carries the consequence? What do we call freedom, and where does responsibility begin? Because representation is not decoration. It is a society’s ability to see. If everyone making decisions has been trained by similar institutions, rewarded for similar behaviour and taught to define success, security and progress in similar ways, then changing the faces in the room may not be enough. Perhaps we also need different rooms. Different ways of sharing power. Different kinds of leaders. And a much deeper understanding of what representation is actually for. Representation is not just about who gets a seat at the table.     Is Voting Really Government by the People? | Rethinking Everything Ep.6

    We say that people govern because people are allowed to vote. But what if our political choices are shaped by parties, wealth, media and institutions long before the ballot reaches our hands? What if some of the forces making the most consequential decisions cannot be removed by voters at all? In this episode of Rethinking Everything, we explore the difference between being allowed to choose power and genuinely sharing it. We ask what citizens owe democracy—but also what democracy owes its people. We examine political promises and compromises, economic power, media influence, long-term accountability and the tension between four-year election cycles and consequences that can last for generations. But this episode does not stop at criticism. It explores new possibilities: permanent citizens’ councils, participatory budgeting, workplace democracy, institutions representing future generations—and a new model for holding political parties accountable before an election. Because before politicians tell us what they want to do with our votes next time, perhaps they should answer another question: What did you do with them last time? A vote is not a gift that becomes the property of a political party once it has been counted. It is a temporary act of trust—power borrowed and exercised in our names. Perhaps the question is not whether democracy should be abandoned. Perhaps the question is whether we have ever dared to complete it.     When the People’s Game No Longer Belongs to the People | FIFA & Power | Episode 5

    Football does not begin in a corporate suite. It begins in streets, schoolyards, parks, dusty fields, beaches, neighbourhood clubs, and pieces of ground that were never designed to become stadiums. Someone puts down a ball. Someone else understands the invitation: Play. But what happens when one of humanity’s most accessible and beloved games becomes organised through thousand-dollar tickets, luxury hospitality packages, global sponsorships, political proximity, restricted access, and systems increasingly designed around purchasing power? In this episode of Rethinking Everything, we use FIFA and the World Cup to explore a much larger question: What happens when an institution begins confusing stewardship with ownership? We look at ticket prices, resale systems, VIP culture, sponsorship, political influence, borders and access, but most of all at the people whose love made football valuable in the first place. Because perhaps this is not only a story about FIFA. Perhaps FIFA is a concentrated version of something happening throughout modern society.     What If Kindness Were Infrastructure? | Rethinking Everything — Episode 4

    We often speak about kindness as something personal: a warm smile, a helping hand, or someone choosing to stay for one extra minute. But what if kindness could also be built into society? Into our schools. Healthcare systems. Workplaces. Housing policies. Technology. Laws and public services. This episode is not about kindness as politeness or the avoidance of conflict. It is about kindness as prevention, dignity, and social design — the practical work of reducing unnecessary suffering before a human being reaches breaking point. When someone is supported by a nurse who stays for one extra minute, a teacher who sees the child behind the behaviour, or a public employee who helps them understand a complicated form, we often say that person has gone beyond what their job requires. But why is the human part treated as something separate from the real work? In Episode 4 of Rethinking Everything, I explore what might change if kindness did not depend solely on the goodness, energy, and emotional capacity of individuals — but were built into the structures of society itself. What would a waiting room look like if it were designed for people experiencing pain, fear, sensory overload, disability, and uncertainty? What might change if a school asked what a child was carrying instead of only asking what was wrong with them? How would workplaces function if they recognised that human capacity changes throughout a lifetime? And what if every proposed law had to undergo a human reality check before it could be introduced? Kindness does not mean that boundaries or consequences disappear. Kindness can be clear, strong, and protective. It can recognise that something is causing harm and insist that it must change. Kindness as infrastructure would not create a world in which nobody suffers. Illness, grief, loss, and uncertainty would still remain part of human life. But it would refuse to place unnecessary suffering on top of the pain that already cannot be avoided. Perhaps kindness is not decoration added to a finished society. Perhaps it belongs in the foundation.     What If New Ways of Thinking Could Create a New Society? | Rethinking Society, Episode 3

    Everything around us was once imagined. The working week. The school day. Offices, cities, economies, ownership systems, public services, and the ways we measure success. None of them appeared as laws of nature. They were shaped by human choices, inherited assumptions, and the questions societies learned to ask. In Episode 3 of Rethinking Society, Verdandi Weaver explores what becomes possible when we stop treating familiar systems as inevitable. What if we began with life rather than profit? What if we designed around human capacity, care, relationship, belonging, and ecological reality? What if progress meant less fear, less exhaustion, less waste, and more possibility? This episode is not an attempt to present one finished blueprint for a new society. It is an invitation to recover something many of us have quietly lost: the permission to imagine together.     Maybe We Need Councils, Not Leaders | Rethinking Society Ep. 2

    We keep searching for the right leader. Someone wise enough, honest enough, strong enough, and compassionate enough to carry the needs of an entire country. But what if the problem is not only the person holding power? What if part of the problem is the chair itself? In Episode 2 of Rethinking Society with Verdandi Weaver, we explore what might change if leadership were shared through councils containing more lived realities, more forms of knowledge, greater accountability, and people who understand the consequences of decisions from close experience. A council is not simply more chairs. It is more realities in the room. What might carers, teachers, nurses, disabled people, parents, workers, young people, elders, peace-builders, and others close to human consequences bring into political decision-making? How could future generations and the living Earth be represented? What safeguards would councils need to prevent domination, distance, and the concentration of power? And what would change if leadership were understood as a temporary responsibility rather than a permanent identity? Central question What changes when more human realities are present before decisions are made? This episode is not an argument for removing responsibility or replacing one rigid structure with another.     A Country Is Not an Economy With People Attached to It | Rethinking Society, Episode 1

    What is a country actually for? When we talk about whether a country is successful, we usually hear about economic growth, productivity, employment, markets, investment, and national wealth. But where are the people in that picture? A country is not an economy with people attached to it. A country is people, with an economy that is supposed to serve their lives. In the first episode of Rethinking Society with Verdandi Weaver, we explore what happens when growth, productivity, and efficiency become more important than health, care, time, dignity, belonging, and the lives people are actually living. An economy matters. It helps organise food, housing, healthcare, transport, energy, work, and trade. But an economy is a human-made tool. It should never become more important than the people and the living world it was created to support. This episode asks what a successful society might look like if we also measured: * whether people can afford a safe home * whether children have time to be children * whether parents have time and energy for their families * whether healthcare is available when people need it * whether disabled and chronically ill people can live with dignity * whether older people feel valued * whether communities have time for friendship, creativity, grief, and joy * whether rivers are becoming cleaner and forests remain standing * whether people feel less afraid of losing everything A country can become wealthier on paper while its people become more exhausted, lonely, anxious, and insecure. Is that success? Perhaps a successful country is not one that extracts the most from its people. Perhaps it is one that allows people to remain human. Central question Does the economy serve human life, or is human life being asked to serve the economy? Share what you see from where you stand.
