Rethinking what we thought we already knew about the Bible. Gregory D. Hall (DMin) examines familiar scriptures from a thematic perspective and speaks with respected scholars about new ways the Scriptures can be examined. The Rethinking Scripture Podcast will allow you to better grasp a biblical understanding of where humanity has been, who we are, and what lies ahead.
1. Introduction to Rethinking Scripture
Why is it important to rethink what we already know about the Bible? Well... because what we think we know is very likely wrong. Or at least it has been somehow altered, away from its original meaning, by our traditions and creeds. We also need to rethink because it's exactly what we don't want to do on our own. It's a human condition to want to hunker down and think the same way we've always thought. But intelligence in the modern era is more about how adaptable to change we are... than our unwillingness to think about something new.
2. Introduction to the Gospel of John
What happens when we back away from the gospel of John and ask about its relationship to John's other writings? In this episode, we follow the theme of redemption in John's gospel into the book of Revelation. It's a beautiful mosaic of Christ's work.
3. John 1 - Rethinking Conversion
Why is John 1 written in such a fragmented format? It's because there were a bunch of Old Testament Saints alive that still needed to hear about Jesus. In this episode we rethink the topic of "conversion" by considering the first-century faithful remnant, who were already saved before they met the Messiah.
4. John 2 - The Wedding Theme in John's Gospel
There’s a wedding theme in the book of John. The author introduces it early in the gospel and it includes a complicated mix of Old Testament references and thematic suggestions. But why would John include a wedding theme? It's because Jesus is getting married!
5. John 3 - The Curious Case of Nick at Night - Pt. 1
Nicodemus is a well known character in John’s gospel. He comes to Jesus at night. He has lots of questions… and he often doesn’t seem to follow the conversation very well. But I think Nicodemus has been completely misunderstood. Who exactly is this mysterious man? There’s a lot to rethink in this week’s episode and I invite you to join me outside the box?
6. John 3 - The Curious Case of Nick at Night - Pt. 2
Nicodemus is a complicated character, and his conversation with Jesus in John chapter 3 gives several clues about his spiritual condition. Today, we’ll be rethinking what you thought you already knew about this man... and by the time we’re done, we might even change the color of the some of the letters in your Bible.
Clear and insightful
Greg Hall does a wonderful job of bringing scripture to life. Not only does this podcast give new ideas of our old beliefs but it connects the Old Testament and New Testament in such a way that you see clearly how these stories are actually one long story of God’s love. Great for a small group study.
Truly deep insights I didn’t see before!
Very interesting and professionally done!
I’ve loved hearing a different view of John’s gospel based on all the scholarly research Dr Hall had brought into the discussion. It has really stretched my mind and continued the journey of learning context that started when I started listening to Dr Michael Heiser. Highly recommended!
