At just 12 years old, living in a trailer park in Japan where his father was stationed in the military, Holland first encountered Jesus. Though drawn at first by free food and a girl he liked, his life changed one evening during a Young Life Bible study. As the leader read from John 3, Holland suddenly heard an audible voice say, “Holland, I love you.”Overcome, he wept uncontrollably, sensing God’s presence for the first time. Walking home afterward, he prayed simply, “Lord, I will follow You the rest of my life.” That moment marked his new birth in Christ, leading him to immerse himself in Scripture, worship, and eventually a lifelong ministry of leading others into God’s presence. Katie and Kim both followed God’s call to serve in Philadelphia’s notorious Kensington neighborhood—despite the fear it stirred in their loved ones. “When my mom first saw Kensington, she was afraid and told me not to go,” Kim recalled. “But as I shared what the Lord was doing, she started praying. Now she says, ‘The Lord has her there.’” Katie's story echoed the same tension. “Even with parents who trust the Lord, it was hard. When they dropped me off for my internship, my mom saw the tent encampment where I’d be living—it was shocking. From Addiction to Leadership: Teaching Truth in an Unchurched City | Pastor Travis Carey

Pastor Travis Carey of Calvary Chapel Greater Portland shared how God has been powerfully at work in one of America’s most unchurched cities. Despite launching during Maine’s COVID-19 lockdowns, the fellowship quickly outgrew its small beginnings as both scattered believers and seekers hungry for truth began to gather. “The Great Commission doesn’t have an exception clause,” Carey noted, emphasizing the church’s commitment to teaching God’s Word verse by verse and providing a refuge for those abandoned by churches that shuttered during the pandemic. Carey, once bound by addiction himself, described the impact of discipleship in his own life and how that experience now fuels his ministry to others through the church’s Rule Over Addiction ministry and leadership training. “We’re watching the relay race continue,” he said, describing how former addicts now lead and serve. Carey looks ahead with a vision to expand into residential discipleship and plant churches across Maine. “It’s not about seating capacity but sending capacity,” he affirmed, trusting God to continue raising up men and women of conviction in these last days.
