Risk Raiders

Brent Borgstedte/Jeff Shropshire

Risk Raiders is a comedic hangout podcast hosted by two Red Raiders, Jeff Shropshire and Brent Borgstedte, who took two different paths out of Lubbock. We didn't overlap at Texas Tech — we met a few years after graduation and have been friends ever since. Every week, we get on the mic to talk about Hot Takes, Wild Stories, Real Risks, and the kind of decisions that make you say "you did WHAT?" Sometimes we sit down with someone interesting and let them walk us through how they got where they are — and the risks they took along the way. Our guests come from everywhere. You'll be surprised who you end up learning from. Somewhere between the laughs and the arguments, you'll pick up a few risk management lessons without even knowing it. New shows typically post at 8am every Tuesday.

Airing of Grievances: Tanks, Tips, Towels and Turn Signals

Jeff rolls in “a little crusty,” Brent declares it basically Festivus, and Risk Raiders officially enters Airing of Grievances mode. This time, we’re going after four pillars of everyday annoyance: gas tanks, tipping guilt, hotel towels, and turn signals. From gas‑pump ads screaming at you while you’re just trying to fill the tank, to POS screens guilting you into 20–40% tips for handing you a soda, to hotel rooms that come with a mysterious number of towels and wash rags, nothing is safe. Then we head onto the freeway, where Houston drivers treat turn signals like a sign of weakness and DPS officers somehow walk up to cars alone at night like absolute heroes. Along the way, there are detours into FIFA fandom, Erling Haaland, pickleball bars that are really just bars, multi‑factor authentication nightmares, and whether insurance agents count as “professionals” or just glorified copier salesmen. It’s not CE credit—it’s cheaper than therapy Timestamps ·        00:00 – Good morning Risk Raiders, Red Raiders, and “FIFA” fans ·        02:00 – Jeff’s “truth serum” day ·        05:00 – Dallas “vacation,” Rangers/Tigers, , and FIFA chaos ·        10:00 – Peak pickleball, “pickle bar” idea ·        15:00 – Gas tanks and gas‑pump ads screaming at you ·        20:00 – Tips and tipping guilt: POS screens ·        25:00 – Towels and wash rags: hotel towel math ·        30:00 – Paper cups vs Styrofoam, “environmental” debates ·        35:00 – Multi‑factor authentication: codes, apps ·        40:00 – Are insurance agents really “professionals”? ·        45:00 – Turn signals and Texas DPS: Houston freeway culture ·        50:00 – Feeder roads, Lubbock grid superiority ⚠️ Disclaimer:   Risk Raiders is an independent podcast and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Texas Tech University. Burn the Boats: What 1776 Teaches Us About Modern Risk

In this Independence Day bonus episode, Jeff Shropshire and Brent Borgstedte unpack how the Founding Fathers literally “burned the boats” and risked everything—land, money, families, even their lives—to chase independence. They connect that same mindset to the risks you face today in business, career moves, and family decisions, so you can take big swings without being reckless. You’ll hear how wealthy landowners walked away from comfort for a purpose bigger than themselves, and how that spirit shows up now when entrepreneurs max out credit cards, borrow from family, and launch businesses with no guarantees. Jeff and Brent talk through career jumps, moving cities, dragging your family into a new chapter, and the difference between a purpose-driven leap and a “fart in the wind” idea that leaves you underwater. Along the way, they dig into why you still need real people (not just algorithms and internet research) to tell you if you’re truly built for a certain risk, and why so many people near the end of life regret the chances they never took more than the risks that went wrong. If you’re feeling that pull to start something, change something, or finally “burn your own boats,” this episode is for you. Hailstorms, High Deductibles, and Roofing Reality with Kris Kincaid

When a hailstorm smokes your roof and your wallet, what do you actually do? In this Risk Raiders episode, Jeff and Brent sit down with Lubbock roofer and entrepreneur Kris Kincaid (Kincaid Roofing, Fund My Deductible) to break down hailstorms, high deductibles, ACV vs RCV, and how to avoid committing insurance fraud just trying to save a buck. Kris shares how he went from washing cars in the 806 to chasing storms in Omaha, sleeping on a blow‑up mattress, and eventually building a 20‑year local roofing company in West Texas. They dig into why conservative growth beats “one big storm year,” how to choose the right contractor after a loss, and why some customers can completely drain your bandwidth if you let them. They also unpack today’s reality for property owners: percentage deductibles, roof schedules, “roof performance” policies that feel like RCV wrapped in ACV, and what that means when your roof actually gets hit. Kris explains how Fund My Deductible became a nationwide tool that helps homeowners and property owners legally fund deductibles and upgrades—without fake invoices or deductible‑eating games. The Risk of Going From Radio Host to Media Company – with Ryan Hyatt

In this Risk Raiders episode, Jeff and Brent sit down with longtime West Texas broadcaster Ryan Hyatt to unpack what it really looks like to walk away from the safety of a radio job and build your own media company. Ryan shares how he went from being “just” a host to buying his own time, taking control of the revenue, and eventually moving fully into a digital‑first world where he lives or dies by his own efforts. They dig into the business side most listeners never see: structuring deals with stations, owning inventory, building an online audience, and managing the risk of betting on yourself instead of waiting on someone else to sell your show. Along the way, Ryan talks about what still works from the old radio playbook, what absolutely doesn’t translate online, and the mindset shift it takes to go from employee to media owner. If you’re a business owner or creator wondering how far you can push your own platform—and what kind of risk that really involves—this conversation will give you a clear, unvarnished look at the trade‑offs.
