Lea, Keisha, CiCi, and Marlena sat down with Tiffany to talk about their experiences with homelessness. The ladies are current residents of Open Door Women’s Shelter. While the women may have some commonalities, their journeys have been very different. Could you imagine that relocating to a new city to be with family would lead you to become unhoused? How about having money and no options for housing? How about taking a leap of faith to change jobs? How about having to take your nine year old child to a shelter on Christmas Eve? In Episode 11, these ladies debunk myths and stereotypes about homelessness and how one finds themself in this situation. They also speak about how the bond that they have formed while in the women’s shelter keeps them positive, hopeful, and thankful. Episode 10 continues with special guest Jewell Gardner. Jewell discusses the mental health struggles that she personally faced, and how she realized the need for self-care in order to continue to effectively support her son. She then tells Tiffany about the realization that her youngest son was also beginning to experience mental health challenges, just as her oldest son began to experience a new challenge of substance use. She details the progression of her son’s opioid use disorder, the stage of helplessness and vulnerability that she and her son feel as he continues to still struggle, and the criteria for involuntary commitment (IVC). She concludes with her “WHY” as a parent and clinician, her hopes for her son, and why she feels it’s important for her to tell her son’s story from her perspective.
