We’ve just seen the latest on the Iran front. Once again, Washington’s civilian leadership is steering us deeper into conflict while our readiness, our warriors, and our trust in the chain of command take the hit. This isn’t new. From endless proxy fights to decisions that hollowed out the force at home, the people in suits keep sending the people in uniform into harm’s way—and too often treating them as expendable when they push back. My guest today lived that reality. John Frankman is a former Army Captain and Green Beret with 7th Special Forces Group. Before putting on the uniform, he spent four years in Catholic seminary studying for the priesthood with the goal of becoming a chaplain, until he discerned God had a different mission for him. When the COVID vaccine mandate hit, John refused what he and many others saw as an unlawful and immoral order. On July 1, 2023, he voluntarily separated rather than compromise. He didn’t go quietly. That project is at the center of one of the clearest cases of weaponized prosecution I’ve seen. Chris Mazzei is a husband, a father, and a small-business owner. During the pandemic he and his wife Erin took out a PPP loan for that series. They relied on written guidance from the loan originator that projected payroll figures were acceptable—standard practice in traditional SBA programs. They were fully transparent. Most of the money was either repaid or never even used before sentencing. Yet federal prosecutors seized the family’s assets a full year before any charges were filed. They forced the family home into foreclosure. They threatened to criminally charge Chris’s 78-year-old mother if the couple didn’t take a plea deal or if they tried to submit exculpatory evidence. Ten days after sentencing, federal agents showed up at the foreclosure auction and bid on the Mazzei home, using money they had already seized from the family. The same government that called it fraud was ready to profit from more than a million dollars in equity they had taken from this family. Erin has already served her time. Is the Iran War Widening to Encompass Eastern Europe’s War? | EP 693
