    Signal Light

    Signal Light

Before we dive back into the world of our troubled teen superheroes, we take time to flesh out our version of Halcyon City.  Who is Maggie McIntyre, and who did she fight? Who is the ex-hero that killed Hal Monroe's team, and what is his history?  How many aliens have passed through Halcyon?  Why did the Good Boy pick that particular name?  All this and more will be answered in today's episode!  (Though if you don't like worldbuilding episodes, you can safely skip this and go into the next season without it.)
The game we played today is Signal Light, a Masks-themed hack of Microscope.  Microscope was written by Ben Robbins; Signal Light was written by James Malloy.

wonderful people, memorable characters, interesting games

all around wonderful podcast!

it’s great fun to listen to and it’s easy to fall in love with all of the characters that are played

good content made inaccessible by bad audio

I started with the Pittsburgh arc after seeing it recommended as a good example of the Urban Shadows game. Three episodes in, I am enjoying the characters and play and would cautiously consider this a very high quality actual play.

HOWEVER, the audio quality is so uneven that it’s almost inaccessible. I am very tolerant of audio issues if the content is good, but I am also slightly hard of hearing and have audio processing issues. In this podcast the volume is all over the place. Several players are extremely soft-spoken with voices in particularly high or low registers (combined with a poor mic or low recording volume?), and I I often can’t understand anything they say. Turning my phone volume up barely helps, and blows out my ears when the louder players laugh or talk. There are also a lot of echoes that can muddle with my audio processing.

I checked a few minutes of a newer episode and didn’t see an improvement. This audio issue is bad enough that I may not be able to muscle through, and even though I know audio equipment is expensive, I wish the creators would address this feedback. The content is great and deserves to be more easily accessible.

Aging like a fine wine

I’ve listened to this group from the start and I have to say they are addicting. Their chemistry just keeps improving and “Steel City Rhapsody” is turning out to be such fun to listen to. It can feel like hanging out with a bunch of friends. A special shout out to the GM Kyle who really keeps things rolling.
