Mid-July. Dry lightning all around. The power goes out, and with it the Wi-Fi, the phones, and the water pressure. That's the true story that kicks off this episode of the Rural E Podcast. A week after installing a GenerLink transfer switch at a 100-year-old farmhouse, the power went out again. This time we backed an electric pickup into the driveway, plugged it in, and the whole house came back on. Two and a half hours later the truck had used 8.4 kWh, about 3% of its battery, or 17 miles of range. Co-host Michael Kluz joins to walk through what happened, what it took to install, and the other backup options now on the market, from plug-in batteries a renter can take with them to whole-home systems that turn an EV into a house battery. In this episode: ▸ The outage that started it: no power, no cell coverage, no water pressure, lightning all around ▸ Why outages are getting longer: the co-op's "one trip" fire-season setting ▸ What a GenerLink is: a transfer switch that sits behind your electric meter ▸ The install: why it took both a utility lineman and an electrician ▸ The bonded-neutral problem, and the adapter cable built for the Ford F-150 Lightning ▸ The real-world test: running the house off a Chevy Silverado EV ▸ What we shut off (water heater, heat pump) and what kept running (fridge, three freezers, Wi-Fi, a sprinkler pump) ▸ The numbers: 2 hours 28 minutes, 8.4 kWh, 3% of the battery ▸ Home batteries compared: Tesla Powerwall, Generac, Sigenergy, Enphase, and the plug-in Pila ▸ Time-of-use rates, and when a battery pays for itself beyond resiliency ▸ Backup power for home medical equipment ▸ V2X, the missing standard, and what bidirectional use could mean for your EV warranty One thing to take away: the cable used here is only approved for the Ford F-150 Lightning. We used it with the Silverado in an emergency. Talk to your utility before you install anything behind the meter; ours had to approve the install and pull the meter.
