The Ten Commandments: Episode Nine
In the second season of Red River Reformed, we will be discussing the Ten Commandments through the lens of their original meaning, their fulfilment in the New Testament, and their ongoing application for us today. In this episode we discuss the seventh commandment.
The seventh commandment, "You shall not commit adultery," protects the covenant of marriage and orders human sexuality. Marriage–the exclusive, lifelong, and covenantal union between one man and one woman–is an icon of God's covenantal relationship to his people in Christ, who perfectly and faithfully loves his bride, the Church.
We will release episodes weekly on Tuesdays. If you have questions comment or email us! (redriverreformed@gmail.com) We will do a mailbag episode at the end of the season.
Here are some questions we discuss in this episode:
- What is adultery?
- How does the covenant of marriage relate to or image God's relationship to his people?
- What is the relationship between adultery and idolatry?
- What was God's design for marriage in creation?
- How should we understand the widespread practice of polygamy in the Old Testament historical books?
- How does Jesus expand and intensify our understanding of the seventh commandment?
- How does Jesus love his bride, the Church?
- What is required to obey this commandment at a time when pornography is so readily accessible and consent is the only ethical norm governing sexual expression?
