    The story begins with the ghost of Wei Wuxian having been pulled into the body of a local gay boy Mo Xuanyu. In his past life, he was a feared and ostracized cultivator who raised armies of the dead. Now he's the boogieman tasked with getting revenge against Mo Xuanyu's family for torturing the poor misunderstood twink.     S3 E2 - MDZS chapter 2-3 deepdive

    Wei Wuxian travels to Mount Dafan in search of evil spirits to control, and finds himself in the middle of a giant nighhunt, where cultivators are trying to solve the mystery of a soul eating spirit. He runs into a Jin teenager, and insults him, but he turns out to be his nephew Jin Ling. Jiang Cheng, Lan Wangji, and the Lan Juniors also appear. Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji get into an almost-fight over the golden nets, but Jiang Cheng decides to reign in his temper for politics.     S3 E3 - MDZS chapter 3 deepdive

    Wei Wuxian punishes himself for insulting Jin Ling and decides to leave the mountain so that he doesn't get in the way of Jin Ling’s nightunt. But then he realizes that the creature is more dangerous than everyone expected. He rushes to the shrine of the heavenly maiden, just as it comes to life and begins to devour the cultivators’ souls. Wei Wuxian is forced to summon a ghost to fight against the statue, and ends up summoning the feared ghost general Wen Ning. Jiang Cheng suspects him of being possessed by the ghost of Wei Wuxian and strikes him with Zidian, but nothing happens. Wei Wuxian acts super gay to scare away Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji, but then Lan Wangji declares that he will take Wei Wuxian back to the Lan Clan with him.     S3 E4 - MDZS chapter 4 part 1 deepdive

    Wei Wuxian is taken into the lan clan against his will. The more he interacts with Lan Wangji the more he realizes he doesn’t know him at all! He finds secret alcohol hidden in Lan Wangji’s personal rooms, and sees that there are scars from the discipline whip all across his back. Wei Wuxian still wants to leave, so he acts more crazy and shameless to try and get kicked out. But Lan Wangji accepts his shamelessness and doesn't let him go. Then we enter a flashback as Wei Wuxian thinks back on how he met Lan Wangji as a teenager, and how different he is now compared to back then. He and his peers are visiting cloud recesses for lessons. On his first night, Wei Wuxian gets caught breaking the rules and fights Lan Wangji. Then the next day he causes trouble in class and gets kicked out by Lan Qiren.     S3 E5 - MDZS chapter 4 part 2 deepdive

    Wei Wuxian is caught helping the other students cheat and is sent to the library pavilion to copy rules as punishment. Lan Wangji is sent to supervise him and make sure he doesn't cheat. Wei Wuxian gets bored easily and tries to bother Lan Wangji, but he is ignored. Finally, Wei Wuxian pulls a prank on Lan Wangji and swaps out his book with a book of pornography! Lan Wangji is enraged and tears the book into pieces before shouting “get lost!” The next day they run into Lan Xichen who tells them about a situation of water ghouls nearby. Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng volunteer to help. During the hunt, they discover that the water ghouls are actually a waterborne abyss sent by the Wen Clan.     S3 E6 - MDZS ch 4-5

    In the past, Wei Wuxian is caught breaking curfew again by Lan Wangji. He tricks Lan Wangji into breaking curfew with him, but Lan Wangji surprises him when he reports himself and Wei Wuxian for punishment the next morning. After they are beaten by the punishment rods, Lan Xichen tells Wei Wuxian of the cold springs for healing, and Wei Wuxian finds Lan Wangji there and harrasses him. Later, Wei Wuxian gets into a fist fight with Jin Zixuan  and leaves the cloud recesses. Back to the present, the juniors and Wei Wuxian hear an alarm bell ring out. They go to the Nether Room, and Wei Wuxian forces himself inside. There he finds the ghost arm from Mo Manor emitting so much evil energy that the lan elders have all fainted. Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian try to play a duet to summon the arm’s soul but it doesn't work because the soul has been split into pieces.     S3 E7 - MDZS ch 5 deepdive

    Lan Wangji  and Wei Wuxian  descend Cloud Recesses in order to find the remaining corpse parts of the ghost arm. They follow its pointed finger to the Qinghe region of the Nie Sect. They run into Jin Ling and his dog but Wei Wuxian  is deathly afraid of dogs and screams for Lan Wangji  to save him. After Jin Ling and his dog leave, Wei Wuxian  finds out from a sussy merchant that there are rumors of a man eating fortress in the forest. He also finds out that Nie Huaisang has a terrible reputation as a weak sect leader. Wei Wuxian  and Lan Wangji  enter the man eating fortress and save Jin Ling from being buried alive.     S3 E8 - MDZS ch 6 deepdive

    Wei Wuxian  and Lan Wangji  save Jin Ling from the man eating fortress, as Jin Ling’s dog chases away a suspicious suspect. Lan Wangji  chases after the suspect, while Wei Wuxian  takes Jin Ling back to town. He transfers a curse on Jin Ling’s leg to his own, but when Jin Ling wakes up, he runs away. Wei Wuxian  follows after him and is captured by Jiang Cheng . Seeing that Wei Wuxian  is afraid of Jin Ling’s dog, Jiang Cheng  confirms Wei Wuxian ’s true identity. Jin Ling helps Wei Wuxian  escape, but is flustered when Wei Wuxian  sincerely thanks him and apologizes to him. Later, Wei Wuxian  and Lan Wangji  interrogate Nie Huaisang , the culprit behind the man eating fortress. But it turns out the fortress is actually the burial hall for the Nie Sabers, which need corpses to suppress their bloodshed.
