My therapist is a black woman who looks like me, oddly enough. But when I was seeking therapy I wanted a white man. Hanif (a black man) also goes to therapy - his therapist is a woman and he says he is not interested in having a male therapist, EVER! We talk about past therapy experiences, does the race and gender of your therapist matter, can you be friends with your therapist and of course we trail off into side conversations about the holidays, money, and me becoming a nail tech.
