    Movie Review: Black Mirror Season 1 Episode 3 “The Entire History of You”

    It was released on December 18, 2011, written by Jesse Armstrong and directed by Brian Welsh. The episode takes place in a world where people get to keep a digital record of all their memories through a tiny recording implant called a grain. The grain functions like a permanent video camera, recording everything that happens, from dinner parties to work meetings. Recorded memories can be played back in two different ways: internally, within someone’s mind, and externally, on a screen. The grain even has editing options that allow you to delete memories. We follow Liam (Toby Kebbell), a young lawyer who begins to suspect that his wife, Ffion (Jodie Whittaker), may have cheated on him in the past. Emotionally spiraling out of control by this realization, he uses his grain (and Ffion’s) to replay memories and verify his suspicions. It turns out he is right: Ffion has indeed betrayed him. However, for all of his desire to see into the past—literally, frame by frame—Liam ultimately ends up worse off by knowing what he knows. The episode ends with him manically attempting to cut the grain out of his head.
