Sant Attar Singh Ji

Sant Attar Singh Ji, the most widely known and respected Sant in modern times, was born at Cheema, a village in the erstwhile Jind State (now in Sangrur district of Punjab, India) on 28 March 1866. His advocacy of education for the girl-child, and blending education with spirituality show his sense of foresightedness. Even a century back, he knew that mere scientific education would only lead to destruction, and education of the girl-child would result in the whole family getting educated. Towards that end, he first set up a school for girls in 1906.

In this profound episode of Sant Attar Singh Ji Jeevan Katha (Audio Book), we witness the continuation of an extraordinary phase of six months of intense spiritual austerity undertaken by Sant Attar Singh Ji Maharaj. For two months, Sant Ji remains outwardly present. Thereafter, he gradually reduces his food intake once again, until by the eighth day he completely abstains from solid food. Mai Bhagbhari, now familiar with his earlier discipline, gently asks whether another chilla (extended meditation retreat) has begun. Sant Ji smiles and acknowledges her understanding. Upon loving insistence from the devoted couple to accept some nourishment, Sant Ji explains that heavy food disrupts continuous absorption in meditation. He instructs them to leave a small portion of milk at Amrit Vela and a little sardai in the evening outside the Kutia, which he would quietly take himself. He also asks that a daily datan be placed nearby. 🎙️ This episode beautifully reflects extreme simplicity, self-discipline, and the saint’s unwavering focus on uninterrupted Naam Simran. © Copyright - The Kalgidhar Trust - Baru Sahib Produced by - Department of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Studies, Akal University, Talwandi Sabo, Punjab Book Reference: Gurmukh Pyare - Sant Attar Singh Ji, Mastuana Sahib Wale Written By - Sant Teja Singh ji, M.A., L.L.B.
