S2 E2: The Scandalous San Franciscan: Alma Spreckels

Alma de Brettville Spreckels is considered the great-grandmother of San Francisco. Born to a working-class family of Danish immigrants, Alma used her incredible beauty to claw her way up the social and financial ladder. The result would be a scandalous career of nude modeling and a breach of promise suit where she sued her intended fiance for $50,000 when he refused to marry her. Despite the scandalous newspaper reports of the trial, Alma was still able to bag the wealthy son of a sugar magnate and live happily ever after. In Alma's case, "Happily Ever After" involved spending lavish sums on a new mansion and eventually an art museum that operates to this day. =============================================================== Visit Scandal Sheets on Facebook and Instagram (@scandalsheetspod) for all things scandalous! E36: The First Cassius Clay, Scandalous Politician and Abolitionist

Most everyone knows the name Cassius Clay--it was the birth name of the late, great Muhammad Ali. But he was named after Cassius Marcellus Clay, a 19th century Kentucky politician turned firebrand abolitionist. Born on a wealthy plantation, Clay was inspired by his time at Princeton, where he saw William Lloyd Garrison speak, he would agitate for abolition beginning in the 1830s. But he was a bit of a hellraiser in his personal life, fighting many duels, inciting brawls, and even taking a bullet. Oh and having a mysterious affair with a Russian ballet dancer....and marrying a woman 60 years younger than himself. Join Caroline and Adrienne for all the fun as they explore the many scandals of Cassius Marcellus Clay. =============================================================== Visit Scandal Sheets on Facebook and Instagram (@scandalsheetspod) and our website, www.scandalsheetspod.com. E35: The Scandalous Doctor to the Dead: Carl Tanzler von Casel

Carl Tanzler was a German born man of mystery who little is known about except for two things: he had a spectacular imagination and a VERY obsessive nature. In the early 1930s he took a shine to a beautiful, but terminally ill patient at the Marine Hospital in Key West, Florida. It could have been like a Nicholas Sparks book with pledges of love and hasty marriages, but it ended up more like an episode of "Tales from the Crypt". Join Caroline and Adrienne as they dive into the deep and murky waters of an obsession that went well beyond the grave. Spoiler alert: you will not want to eat your Thanksgiving turkey while listening. =============================================================== Visit Scandal Sheets on Facebook and Instagram (@scandalsheetspod) and our website, www.scandalsheetspod.com.
