There are so many guides out there for how to make a podcast, and for how to make an audio drama. But there’s a difference between reading an article and hearing the reality behind the process.

Scoring Magic is a podcast by Hug House Productions documenting every step of the process. Scoring Magic follows Anne Baird, Katie Youmans, and Wil Williams as they make their first audio drama. They’ll share tips, tricks, and resources, but also what it’s like to work on a massive creative project with friends.

There’s going to be exciting highs, like the moment they decided to work together–but there’s also going to be some very honest lows along the way. And all of it will lead to an audio drama they hope you’re going to love.

A How To Guide For Audio Drama

Everyone I know who listens to podcasts regularly dreams of one day creating their own, and that seems doubly true for the audio drama crowd. This show has a relaxed but informative tone that documents the process of putting together an audio drama from the beginning.

Scoring Magic follows the creation of the audio drama podcast Valence as the team works to get that show out into the world, so it will be a real-world workshop where you'll get to hear the end product being discussed. The hosts know their way around podcasting and are putting the things they've learned into one handy feed so you can go back and listen as you work on your own shows.

It's fun, it's informative, and ultimately I think it will make a positive impact on the podcasting community as a whole as everyone will have better tools to make the things we'll all love.

Extremely Promising and Exciting

This podcast looks (er, sounds) like it’s going to be amazing. The pilot episode alone has me invested in not only this show, but the accompanying audio drama, to a degree I quite honestly wasn’t expecting. I’m definitely going to be tuning in to both shows the moment more episodes are released.

Not only is this show already an engrossing documentary that helps one understand what it feels like to create, it also seems like it’s going to be an extremely helpful resource for any interested podcast creators. Rest assured, I’m going to be studying the words of Anne, Katie, and Wil obsessively if I ever make a foray into audio drama. Their advice is excellent and will definitely assist with any creative struggles and address any questions or roadblocks that may arise during the creative process.

Additionally, this podcast provides extra insights and behind the scenes content about its upcoming sister show, Valence. Wil describes this new podcast as containing “some magic, some political intrigue, and lots of hijinks.” Believe me, I am 100% here for that.

I’m extremely excited for all future episodes of Scoring Magic, as well as anything else this team creates! I can not recommend this podcast enough. Now stop reading this review and go listen to it already!
