Script Awards

Script Awards Los Angeles

The Script Awards is an international script and writers competition focused on ideas, talent, and narrative structure. The script remains the core of any project, and we highlight the craft of writing and the discipline of storytelling across genres and formats. Since 2016, the Script Awards Los Angeles has awarded close to 300 winners and selected an additional 700+ authors from around the world. For years, we have hosted roundtables and recorded conversations with writers, authors, screenwriters, and playwrights, examining the creative process and the realities of the industry. Today, we are publishing this library online as a podcast, making years of discussions with working writers publicly accessible for the first time.  We hope this initiative will help writers gain confidence by hearing and seeing that no writing path is prewritten or the same. This podcast channel will also serve as an additional outlet for our Writers' Interview Series, offering writers another platform to shine and share. The series features in-depth one-on-one conversations with writers discussing their craft, career paths, and approach to storytelling. You write stories; we tell your story.

Writers’ Interview Series | Ep. 7 | Marcus Nel-Jamal Hamm

What happens when the worlds of The Wire and Breaking Bad collide? In this episode of The Script Awards Podcast, we sit down with award winning filmmaker, writer, producer, and actor Marcus Nel Jamal Hamm to discuss White Rabbit, a gritty crossover fan film that brings together two of television’s most iconic crime dramas. Twenty years after Baltimore drug kingpin Marlo Stanfield seemingly disappeared, homicide detective Marcus Davis receives an anonymous tip that could finally bring the case that has haunted his career to an end. The investigation takes him from Baltimore to Albuquerque, and eventually to the frozen isolation of Alaska, where Marlo has resurfaced with plans to rebuild his criminal empire. His target is Jesse Pinkman, Walter White’s former partner, who has spent years trying to escape his violent past and build a new life under a new identity. But White Rabbit is about more than putting familiar characters into the same story. At its heart, it explores obsession, justice, revenge, redemption, and the question of whether anyone can truly escape the consequences of their past. For Hamm, the project has an especially personal connection to The Wire. His journey as a television actor began when he played Officer Marcus in Season 5 of HBO’s The Wire. Twenty years later, he has written a story that brings new life to that world while connecting it to another landmark crime series, Breaking Bad. We talk with Hamm about that journey, from acting on The Wire to becoming an award winning independent filmmaker, writer, and producer. We explore his approach to writing within established fictional worlds, creating new characters within familiar universes, and developing ambitious stories outside the traditional studio system.
