    Her Seat at the Table; Redesigning Democracy

    The campaign for female increases, representation in leadership and in political party participation in Nigeria is valid and has become universal practice. Several social norms have shaped and determined what gender or groups represent the general population in elected and non-elected political positions in Nigeria, this may largely be a function of the provision and dis-provision of our electoral system. Since the coming of the fourth democratic republic of Nigeria, the country has not attained 30% female representation in elected positions in concordance with the 35%affirmative action. In the 10th Assembly of Nigeria only 4 female lawmakers occupy 109 Senate seats (2.7%) and 16 of the 360 seats in the House of Representatives (4.7%), bringing total female representation in the 469-member Assembly to just 4.2% . There have been several deliberate efforts by the civil society to deconstruct the barriers that affect the participation and full representation of young women in leadership and governance in Nigeria and other parts of Africa. On this episode, 'SDGist with Nerat' brings a phenomenal young politician who is currently the Supervisory Councillor for Social Services in Jos North Local Government Council, Plateau State Nigeria.
