S3E4: "She's playing the victim" - The Media Against Women

TW: This episode contains discussions on mental health, depression, suicide, bulimia, and sexual harassment, assault, and abuse. This episode Alice and Nicolette look into how women are often problematically painted by the media and society, and the discussions that surround those portrayals. Our hosts deep dive into how and women are often illustrated as manipulative and victim-playing, are wiped from the mainstream story, or have to put themselves in the public eye while their perpetrators are protected. The ladies look at current examples, from the discussions that circulated about Meghan Markle in the days following her interview with Harry and Oprah, to the allegations of sexual assault in Australian Parliament. It's a big episode, with big questions, and big reasons why things need to change. 00:00 Intro 00:23 Trigger Warning - mental health, depression, suicide, and sexual harassment, assault, and abuse. 00:38 It's been a big week 01:23 International Women's Day 01:50 The media's portrayal of Meghan Markle post-Oprah interview 10:28 The Princess Diana Interview 12:34 Is it really the "Worst Royal Crisis in 85 Years"? aka There are more important, serious issues the media should be focussing on. 16:36 Taylor Swift and Netflix's Ginny & Georgia 20:40 The importance of publicly airing grievances and seeing yourself through representation in media 23:15 How the current allegations of sexual assault in Australian Parliament are being handled by those in power. 24:05 We need structural, systemic change 26:52 Sexism in the workplace and Justice Carolyn Simpson's quote on women in the legal profession 30:00 Aren't things getting better? 30:45 Testimonies in the TeachUsConsent petition 31:55 A quote from Matthew McConaughey's book Greenlights 32:15 Goodbye and outro The Spike article: https://www.spiked-online.com/2021/03/08/the-unbearable-victim-complex-of-meghan-markle/ The Mirror UK's front body language site: https://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/ask-body-language-expert-your-23616374 Leigh Sales' interview with Julie Bishop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbpCk9PQvZI

    S3E1: Finding Your Voice

We 👏 are 👏 back 👏 !!! Alice and Nicolette are kicking off season 3 by diving deep (like a whooole 40 minutes worth) into how they're finding and using their voices as young twenty-something year olds. For them, 2020 was equal parts disempowering and empowering. In some ways, they found their voices, but in others they felt completely gagged. As they reflect on the past year (and in particular the past 6 months without the podcast), they discuss how their voices and lives have changed not just as a result of a global pandemic but as a consequence of nearing the end of their university degrees, the prospect of full time work, leaving and entering relationships, and basically growing up in the real world.
