    Simple Acts of Service

    Simple Acts of Service

How often have we slowed down the pace of our lives enough to notice the small acts of service we can perform for others?
Those small acts for us often have a larger impact on those who receive them. All we have to do is notice what we can do for others to make a large, positive impact on them and eventually our whole community.
There is a challenge in the video. Start small and then build up to multiple acts. Whether they are small gifts or physical help they create small ripples that grow larger over time. Our actions influence the actions of others. Let's make sure they are positive.

The Life Skills handbook with Shari Pierce

The Life Skills handbook with Shari Pierce

Shari Pierce was born and raised in Yonkers, New York and was a special educator for the Yonkers Public Schools for thirty-three years. For twenty-three of those years, she worked with middle and high-schoolers with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities. Following her retirement, she wrote a book, "Life Skills: A Handbook for Parents & Teachers of the Intellectually Disabled" which gives gentle advice about educating this most special population and emphasizes collaboration among parents, teachers, administrators and support staff. She is also the sibling of an adult with developmental disabilities.

Shari received her B.S. in Special Education from New York University and an M.A. in Learning Disabilities from Teachers College, Columbia University. She was named a Leader in Education by the JCY - Westchester Community Partners in 2012.
    Key Takeaways:
Shari's book is organized in a way that serves as a desk reference.Learning takes place in many different ways, including outside of the classroom, and is often messy when it's authentic.Kids are kids and good teaching is good teaching. We can all learn from what our colleagues are doing in different classrooms.Administrators can support their teachers through understanding, listening, and funding. It's important for administrators to spend time in sub-separate classrooms getting to know the students.Inclusion starts with small steps that lead to greater opportunities. It's important for students to know that they are loved but even more important to feel as if they are valued.Stay in Touch:BookEmail: shari33199@aol.com

    Around, Over, or Through

Nobody is perfect. Situations, even less often.
We will always run across stumbling blocks or barriers to our success. When we do we have three choices we can make instead of giving in and not reaching our goal.
We can go around by finding another solution to the problem. We can go over by persevering until we can overcome by outlasting what is in our way. We can go through by learning from our mistakes and failures and improving the skill set we need to be successful.
What we can't do is accept failure as our final destination.

Emotional Freedom Techniques With Kathleen Weber

Emotional Freedom Techniques With Kathleen Weber

Kathleen Weber is a former school counselor of 25 years and is a Certified, Accredited Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) Practitioner.  She is passionate about bringing tools to educators and students that help to regulate emotions and calm the nervous system.  Prior to using these techniques, she felt like something was missing from her toolbox.  Students would return with the same issue time and time again, or they would return with the same theme, but different players. It wasn't until she learned how to use EFT that she felt she was truly making a difference.  In fact, she loved it so much that she started her own business to support educators experiencing burnout through individual sessions and to offer professional development for teachers, school counselors, and other school staff to bring these techniques into the classroom.
    Key Takeaways
EFT techniques, help us sit and unpack or comfort our emotions by relieving stress in our body and nervous system.EFT is centered on severing the tie between our emotional reaction and the event that occurred.Emotional dysregulation stops our ability to connect with the thinking part of our brain, therefore making talk therapy less effective in the moment.EFT isn't about avoiding triggers, but instead moving through them and being able to help ourselves deal with them.EFT is a gentle, personal technique that is incredibly powerful. There is a demonstration of a regulation technique! It is called “Tap and Breath”Stay in ContactEmail - kathleen@kathleenwebereft.comWebsiteDon’t Forget to Review the Show!

Creating Sustainable Change With Dan Kelley

Creating Sustainable Change With Dan Kelley

Daniel Kelley is an Associate Teaching Professor of Educational Leadership and Policy at the University of Rhode Island. He previously served as the principal of Smithfield High School in Smithfield, RI. During his tenure, he successfully implemented sustainable change initiatives that profoundly impacted the school’s learning culture.

Dan’s contributions to education extend to national leadership roles as well. He served as the president of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) during the 2017-2018 school year and was a member of the NASSP Board of Directors for five years. His broad experience in education includes positions as a high school assistant principal, a high school and middle school special education teacher, and a middle school math and science teacher. In recognition of his outstanding leadership, he was named the Rhode Island Secondary Principal of the Year in 2012.
    Key Takeaways
Securing excellent, early mentors is key to entering leadership. It’s essential to tap those we see as having leadership qualities  early and then give them small leadership opportunities.Leaders need to be very conscious of the language they are using around others so they do not discourage people from moving into the position. There is a critical need for a wider and increased range of people entering leadership roles.Successful change isn’t always about “buy in”, but sometimes the readiness of those implementing the change.Grading is a transactional process that is used to control behavior rather than validate understanding. It's not our job to prepare students for bad practices happening at the next level. You need to spend extra time with veterans who have been practicing the same way for years.Work to meet teachers where they are by going to their classrooms and using different spaces than the main office.Stay in TouchWebsiteLinkedIn

Encouraging

As an educator, I appreciate SEEing to lead because it’s practical but also explores ideas that are out of the norm. The focus on connection and humility in both teaching and leadership is needed. And it’s fun, with some out-of-the-box ideas!
