    How Writing a Novel Can Surface Repressed Memories

    TW: sexual assault and child sexual assault Fiction writing comes from our subconscious, where our imagination is. And guess what else is in there? Trauma! I teach writing students and coaching clients that a book idea comes to you because of something it wants to heal in your subconscious through the writing process. In this episode, it's my turn to share, very vulnerably, about how I know this to be true. My novel, Sister Earth, was based on a dream and the plot centers around a dream. The plot also features a repressed memory, but while I was writing, I attributed it to a friend's anecdote. A year after writing the novel, I discovered in an energy healing session that I, too, have a repressed memory. I didn't know I was writing an allegory to my own childhood trauma. This week we explore beyond our domestic pets and learn about the unique approach to animal welfare at Viva Rescue, a 501(3)(c) nonprofit.  Maya Benperlas, cofounder of Viva, shares the origin of the animal sanctuary, her background with equine-assisted therapy and horse rescues, how volunteers support the work, and the innovative veterinary care and holistic modalities used to give rescue animals their best lives.
