    Oregon is known as the Wild, Wild West because of its rugged landscapes, untamed wilderness, and a long history of frontier independence. From the early days of pioneers braving the Oregon Trail to the present-day spirit of self-reliance found in rural communities, the state’s reputation for wildness is rooted in both its geography and the people who call it home. But Oregon is also known as a place where bad things can happen—and a region notorious for how easy it can be to hide or bury secrets in its vast wilderness. The sheer size and remoteness of its forests, mountains, and rural areas have made it a setting for both mystery and misdeed. The shady forests of the Santiam Wilderness, where Tammy’s car was found, are infamous for murders that have occurred along Highway 20.
