26 | Vicky Reeves & Dr. Kenn Maly, Ego & Awareness

Want to hear a totally fun and meaningful conversation with my good friend, Dr. Kenn Maly? As a retired philosophy professor, ex-Catholic seminarian, Buddhist practitioner and teacher, I was eager to chat with him about the topic of ego and why it got such a bad rap in philosophical and religious circles throughout human history. (I used to think the ego was a bad guy and my goal in life was to eradicate it.) There’s nothing more fun for me than exploring philosophical, psychological, and spiritual ideas with authentic curiosity
and playfulness. If you’re into that kinda thing too, give it a listen.

17 | Vicky Reeves & Dr. Luke Sniewski, Why Listening to Your Body Will Transform Your Life

If you only ever listen to one episode of Shine Freely, let this be the one. ✨

Dr. Luke Sniewski offers so much insight into the world of wellness and awareness. His embodiment of presence and curiosity is delightful, and his explanations are both profound and relatable.

In this episode, we explore the topics he wrote about in his book, Somawise: Get Out of Your Head, Get Into Your Body.

Luke shares his own journey with wellness, including: transforming his body into a professional athlete, traveling the world to study wellness practices as a documentarian, experiencing ayahuasca, completing a PhD on porn addiction while observing it in his own life, and finding his way to the path he’s on today, as a wellbeing coach and somatic therapist. Our conversation included:

Why listening to your body will transform every context of your life
    Common misinterpretations of emotional responses
Distinguishing between triggers (which have the potential to mislead) and fear in response to legitimate danger
Why intention is paramount in ice baths or any conscious discomfort practice
Porn addiction – what Luke learned from studying himself and other men in his PhD research
The inherent problem of relying on willpower
The trap of judging behaviors we’re trying to avoid
What authenticity, curiosity, and presence have to do with healing
How psychedelic plant medicines have the potential to aid in this process
How somatic work leads to an experience of non-duality

You don’t want to miss this episode, but if you do, make sure to check out Luke’s book, Somawise.

Dr. Luke Sniewski is a Wellbeing Coach, Somatic Therapist, and Author who believes that the answers to the most important questions in life are found in the body, not the mind. He integrates his broad personal, academic, and professional experience into a unique approach for helping others. Today, he utilizes Compassionate Inquiry, somatic practices, and healthy lifestyle strategies to help clients experience more vitality, authenticity, and inner peace in everyday life.
