  1. Ep. 13 Nathan Larson

    Ep. 13 Nathan Larson

My guest today is Nathan Larson. He is an bassist, guitarist, singer, songwriter, novelist and accomplished film composer. Born in Maryland in 1970, He came up in the Washington, D.C. hardcore scene as the original bassist for the punk band Swiz from 1987-1989. Afterwards, Larson gained prominence in the 1990s as the lead guitarist for the influential alternative rock band Shudder to Think, greatly contributing to their distinctive sound on the albums Pony Express Record and 50,000 BC. Following the band's hiatus, he released a transcendent solo album, Jealous God in 2001. It is a  personal favorite of mine, and a departure from Shudder to Think.  Transitioning into film scoring, Larson has composed music for over 60 projects, including the Academy Award-winning Boys Don't Cry and others…such as Dirty Pretty Things, Lilya 4-ever, Juliet, Naked and Phone Booth. More recently Larson co-founded the Lumen Project, a nonprofit organizing immersive 6- to 24-hour experimental music and light events that encourage meditation and communal transcendence, with Larson himself frequently performing at these extended sonic experiences. Ep. 12 Adam Bork

My guest today is one of my oldest friends, Adam Bork . We grew up together in Austin, Texas in the 80’s. In 1986 I took Adam to see Jazz innovator Stanley Jordan at the University of Texas. Being an impressionable teenager and burgeoning guitarist, this led Adam to create his own unique guitar style. In the 90’s Adam was a very successful performer, playing in many of Austin’s greatest clubs and winning accolades under the moniker, “Earthpig”.In November, 1994, Adam, me and our friends Chris Searles and Seela Misra were booked to open for Jeff Buckley at the iconic Electric Lounge. In addition to music, Adam is an accomplished photographer and visual artist.  In the 2010s Adam had a Food Truck in Marfa, Texas which gained a lot of national attention : Food Shark.  A program note: most of the photos and videos in today’s video podcast (on YouTube) were taken by Adam.Check out his work here:  https://www.flickr.com/photos/marfadome/ https://www.instagram.com/ghostoffoodshark https://youtube.com/@marfadome Songs:Earthpig - Trek in the HighlandsAfter HoursRockstarCascading TelevisionsFinal DefeatStanley Jordan - Eleanor RigbyJeff Buckley - Dream Brother (Live at Electric Lounge 11/29/1994)Black Sabbath - SupernautNusrat Fateh Ali Khan-Ye Jo Halka Halka Soroor Hai “Everyone Has A Jeff Buckley Story” is created, recorded, edited and produced by Jeff Haley. 3. Ep. 9.2 Matt Johnson

    Ep. 9.2 Matt Johnson

Show notes: Matt discusses his 30 year theory of revival and says he was grateful to have been in studio to record the masterpiece “Grace”.  Matt explains how the members of the band were thrown together (like a “stir fry”, despite not really knowing eachother at all). Also, he says that there was a white knuckling effect of taking musical risks when he was playing and recording with Jeff Buckley. Matt explains that he realized he couldn’t continue with Jeff and that this was a scary decision. He says there were things going on that were a deal-breaker for him.  Matt gives some insight into Buckley’s personality. Jeff was very funny. He also was very insightful into people’s emotional condition.  We conclude by exploring the possibility that Buckley didn’t have an emotional protection that other performers, such as Rufus Wainwright, seem to need to survive long term in the music business. Matt talks about people with special needs and how they experience music. Finally, Matt describes the powerful symmetries between him, Rufus and Jeff, regarding father-son relationships. Thanks Matt. It was honor! You are a legend! Ep. 9.1 Matt Johnson

Part 1 of 2A note to our listeners: This is an expanded version of this interview. The video version is available at:https://youtu.be/PkKqM9hVw3ICome back next week for an in depth interview about Jeff Buckley. For this season's final episode we have the great drummer himself: Matt Johnson. Matt played drums on Grace and toured with Jeff Buckley all through the world. Many of the guests on Everyone Has A Jeff Buckley Story have spoken about Matt and have given him substantial credit for the phenomenon that Jeff Buckley is and was. I wanted to find out what his drum influences were and how he got to the place he was in when he joined Jeff's band and recorded an album that Rolling Stone says is the 147th greatest album of all time and David Bowie considered the greatest. We also go into recording, playing with live acoustic instruments, what Matt looks for in a bass player, how he approaches triple meter, what his drum teacher told him when he was 11 years old and how he is still on that first drum lesson. Thanks Matt. It was an honor to speak with you!Theme Music "Kanga Roo" from Mystery White Boy"What Will You Say" and "Mojo Pin" from Glastonbury 1995Co-edited by Konrad Meissner Hey!
