    E 23 - Sagan Morrow - Ethical Non-Monogamy

    E 23 - Sagan Morrow - Ethical Non-Monogamy

On the 23rd episode of Shit We Don’t Talk About, we welcome Sagan Morrow to discuss ethical non-monogamy and polyamory and break the mystery and myths wide open. She is a romantic comedy novelist and productivity strategist, hobbyist burlesque dancer, and she identifies as polyamorous.

The idea that there's only one person that we can be romantically in love with is outdated.

What ethical non monogamy does is step away from our traditional understanding of what romantic relationships need to be and flip it on its head. We can step outside of what society tells us we need to do, escaping the conformity of traditional relationship styles and the expected relationship structures within society and make our own rules about our relationships.

Three takeaways from this episode of the Shit We Don’t Talk About podcast:

We really need to tune into what we want, rather than what we're told we should want. There are far too many people out there who are just not happy with their lives seemingly because they didn't actively make a choice of what they wanted to do and just did what they believed they were “supposed” to do.

There are many variations of what ethical non-monogamy is, and each person gets to determine what that means and what those boundaries are for them. It's all about freedom. We get to define things ourselves, create our own labels, and we get to have nuance with them and that definition might evolve over time - and that's more than okay.

When exploring polyamory and ethical non-monogamy, start from a safer space, a place that doesn't feel like it's so far out of your comfort zone. Approaching it the way you would your friendships - you can have love for more than one friend - helps when you consider your romantic relationships.

Sagan started from her safe space, which is writing. Its how she wound up writing her polyamorous passion series that explores polyamory and ethical non monogamy through the lens of romantic comedy. Its given readers a chance to see a different type of love triangle, to see romance happening in all kinds of different ways. And it’s helped others start to ask what freedom looks like in their own relationships.

When asked what some of the questions people can ask themselves when exploring polyamory and ethical non-monogamy, Sagan says “really just sit down and think about what do I want from my life? All other things aside, if I could have everything I want, what would that look like? And really just looking at absolutely everything if I could have everything I possibly wanted? What would it be? Not looking at what's realistic at all, just thinking about what do I actually want?” That's a good place to start.

    We think so too.

EP 022 - Candice Bailey - The 3/5 Clause and Dismantling Racism

EP 022 - Candice Bailey - The 3/5 Clause and Dismantling Racism

On the 22nd episode of Shit We Don’t Talk About, Candace Bailey joins us to disrupt the narrative about race and racism in the US today. She is an advocate against police brutality, and justice, systemic oppression, and racism.
The one thing that’s been apparent the last four years and certainly in the last year is that shit has to start at home. It will take a grassroots effort to change the narrative that is dominated by the mainstream media and social networking sites. We can no longer avoid uncomfortable conversations and need to acknowledge that white supremacy exists on multiple levels, has existed since the founding of our country, can’t be denied, and it can’t be wished away.
Three takeaways from this episode of the Shit We Don’t Talk About podcast:

The root of our issue is that within our country’s founding documents, anyone with melanin in their skin is considered three-fifths of a human being. So we should be talking about what does it mean to be three-fifths of a human and what that means to you as a white person or as a person of color.

America has done a great job throughout its history of putting band-aids on bullet wounds. When you put a bandaid on a bullet wound without removing the bullet, left alone it infects the whole body, and we need to stop asking why that wound doesn’t heal.

When we're talking about the three P's of white power, we’re talking about Plantation, Penitentiary, and Pharma. These three elements are the evolution of white supremacy, where the penitentiary becomes the plantation and Big Pharma is the slave master.

Candace’s advice to white people would be “Listen a lot to people of color, black people. Listen to what they're telling you. And don't be on the defensive. Just absorb some of it and take it home with you and unpack that with your family. And when someone says ‘I'm not racist’, challenge that and say, ‘How are you not racist? Help me to understand what do you do that works against racism every day? Or what do you do that makes you believe that you're not?’”
Asking these types of questions is just the type of grassroots, ground-level conversations that need to be had in order to disrupt the current narrative regarding race and injustice in America.

EP 021 - Rick Finbow | What Are You, Psychic?

In episode  21 of Shit We Don’t Talk About, Mia is joined by Rick Finbow.  Rick is a Denver-based psychic medium, animal communicator, and magical life coach. Mia and Rick dive into the world of trusting your gut, psychic powers, finding the right psychic, tarot card, and more.

Takeaways - What Can A Reader Do For You?

A good reader can help you make sense of the world around you.  Conceptualizing life events or even major societal shifts (global pandemic, anyone?) within the framework of a larger schema that can explain why and how things are happening can be very useful. A reader is not just here to predict the future.  A reader can help you interpret both the past and the present in a productive way.
Readers can help you see and understand patterns and cycles.  Rick points out that so much of the upheaval we are currently experiencing in the world has been repeated again and again throughout the ages. Things that seem overwhelming and “unprecedented” have likely happened before. We can learn from those things.  A good reader can help you see this.
A reader can help you understand and navigate day-to-day situations and challenges.  Especially today, the changes forced upon us by the pandemic, societal and political changes may mean that you have to show up differently in the world.  Your reader can help you get a grip on these things.

EP 020 - Nicole Barham | Keep Your Mind On Your Money

EP 020 - Nicole Barham | Keep Your Mind On Your Money

On Episode 20 of Shit We Don’t Talk About, Mia is joined by finance systems coach Nicole Barham. There’s no better source than Nicole when it comes to solving financial problems by keeping your mind on your money, and your money on your mind!

    Three takeaways from this episode:

Know that you are not alone in your money problems.  Others are struggling too!
Take control!  Ignoring your problems won’t make them go away.  At a minimum, open a spreadsheet and use it to track where your money is.  Start today.  It might be painful to see the reality of the situation, but it is necessary.  Getting closer to your money in this way will help you solve your problems and avoid them in the future.
Just five minutes a day paying attention to your finances is all it takes to get the ball rolling.  You don’t have to become a financial wizard overnight!

EP 019 - Erin Moore | Must Love Dogs and Healing Trauma

EP 019 - Erin Moore | Must Love Dogs and Healing Trauma

On the 19th episode of Shit We Don’t Talk About, Erin Moore’s got the scoop on healing trauma, dogs, and business. We think that’s the perfect hat trick! Besides, it is high time that we start healing trauma and not retraumatizing ourselves, right? We’re all about the good vibes.

Trauma is in everyone’s wheelhouse, and childhood anxiety is not far behind for many people. Since this is the case, it is more critical than ever that we approach healing without shame. It’s tough to do, but that’s why we have Erin. And she has done something really cool, which is working with dogs to help heal her trauma. Unbeknownst to us, the dog training world is filled with women who have turned to animals to get and receive love because, to them, humans hurt.

Three takeaways from this episode of the Shit We Don’t Talk About podcast.

One of the reasons people stay in abusive relationships is because they don’t have a home for their pet. Keep this in mind if you find yourself trying to help someone get to safety.
Do you know the difference between the feelings brought on by your “gut” or “instinct?” Did you know there was a difference? Us either.
Traumatized people look for an external means of healing rather than recognizing what is in their control. Not to sound corny, but healing comes from within.

One of Erin’s fave sayings is, “Whether you’re drowning in a teaspoon or drowning in an ocean, you’re still drowning.” We want to be so careful not to minimize our pain by saying, “But this person had it worse.” Are you doing that? Erin advises on what to do to help yourself. Here’s a hint: put on your oxygen mask first. People dealing with trauma make pledges to care for others in the ways they weren’t cared for. Overdo this, and boom! Drowning.
