He Built A Fantasy Football App & Quit His Job To Run It Full Time | Sidetracked

Mike Barton is the co-founder of Fantasy Genius — a fantasy football analytics platform that gives your league its own website, customized weekly recaps, rivalry history, trade analysis, and more. He joins Jack Fitzpatrick for Episode 9 of Sidetracked.Mike spent seven years as a data analyst at CarMax while building Fantasy Genius nights and weekends. He started it during COVID as a way to make fun of his friends in his fantasy league, posted it on Reddit after his sister-in-law convinced him to, and eventually quit his stable job to do it full time. He built it alongside his brother Jeff — a Virginia Tech alum also based in Richmond — and recently launched a sister product, GeniusPools.io.We get into all of it — how a guy who built a fantasy football analytics company describes himself as a two time league playoff participant, the specific November day that made him realize he had to quit CarMax, why Fantasy Genius writes its content by hand instead of using AI, the Jahmyr Gibbs dynasty trade that haunts him every week, Drake Maye's historically bad start to the 2026 season, and why kickers should be abolished from football entirely.Plus The Three Questions — including a Richmond experience that made the best first day in a new house possible.Sign up at fantasygenius.io or follow @fantasygeniushq on Instagram and Twitter.📻 Sidetracked airs every Friday during Fitz the Bill — 9 AM on 106.1 ESPN Richmond🎙️ Find Sidetracked on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and wherever you listenCHAPTER MARKERS0:00 — Welcome & The Two Time Playoff Participant0:49 — How Fantasy Genius Started — COVID & Reddit2:13 — The Sister-in-Law Who Changed Everything2:35 — The Longer Your League History The Better3:09 — The Schedule Simulator Was Built By A Whiner4:16 — Drake Maye — Is He Drew Brees?8:01 — How A Data Analyst Plays Fantasy Football10:47 — Quitting CarMax After 7 Years12:02 — Building With His Brother Jeff12:38 — Seven Losses In A Row Against Jeff14:39 — Crazy League Settings & Punter Leagues16:33 — SuperFlex Is The Only Right Answer17:47 — JMU Sports PR Class & The Omaha Goldenrods20:37 — The Specific Day He Decided To Quit22:31 — Year One — The Emotional Roller Coaster24:40 — A Touchdown — The Sleeper Partnership25:31 — Working With Roger Sherman From The Ringer25:57 — Why Fantasy Genius Doesn't Use AI27:09 — Trevor Lawrence Kneeling At The One Yard Line28:13 — What Was The Reaction From Family & Friends30:35 — Raising Capital & Expanding Into Basketball & Baseball32:46 — The Not So Serious Recap & Viral Stats39:13 — The Jahmyr Gibbs Dynasty Trade42:16 — The Three Questions — Get Rid Of Kickers49:01 — Analytics Make Football More Fun50:54 — Favorite Richmond Experience — The Diamond & Ardent53:15 — What Would Surprise People — Gilmore Girls & Rom Coms56:24 — Where To Find Fantasy Genius#Sidetracked #FitztheBill #FantasyGenius #FantasyFootball #RVA #Richmond #ESPNRichmond #NFL #FantasyFootballAdvice #DrakeMaye #JahmyrGibbs #FantasyFootballTips #RichmondSports #Startup #smallbusiness

Tennessee Walk-On Dr. Tanner Dobrucky On Chiropractic Care, Psoriasis & Zac Efron | Sidetracked

Dr. Tanner Dobrucky is a chiropractor and sports performance specialist based in Richmond, Virginia — and his path to get here is anything but conventional. He joins Jack Fitzpatrick for this week's episode of Sidetracked.Tanner grew up in Powhatan, transferred to Freeman High School his senior year, walked on at the University of Tennessee with no scholarship offer, made the team after a second tryout that almost didn't happen, played for three head coaches including Josh Heupel who put him on scholarship his fifth year, and then graduated and completely pivoted to chiropractic care after psoriasis led him to a chiropractor who told him to stop eating gluten — and it worked. We get into all of it — what chiropractic care actually is beyond cracking backs, how your nervous system controls your muscles and why that matters for athletes, the ATP and red blood cell conversation that will make you rethink how you fuel your body, what it was like being a walk-on at Neyland Stadium, his first ever game at Alabama, and why he and his wife — a Doctor of Physical Therapy — sometimes butt heads professionally.Plus The Three Questions — including a Zac Efron reveal that genuinely surprised us.Dr. Dobrucky practices in Richmond, VA.
