New York's Modern Art Explosion: Insights from John Strausbaugh

Duchamp Takes New York: How One Artist Helped Spark Modern Art in America | John StrausbaughHost Dian Griesel (Silver Disobedience) welcomes back New York biographer John Strausbaugh to discuss his new book, “Duchamp Takes New York,” exploring how Marcel Duchamp’s 1913 “Nude Descending a Staircase” stood out at the Armory Show and helped jolt American art from classical tradition into modernism. Strausbaugh explains why New Yorkers found Duchamp’s work amusing and provocative, how Duchamp escaped wartime Paris to arrive in New York as a celebrated figure, and how he challenged definitions of art with early conceptual and minimalist ideas. They also discuss why artists often gain value after death, what made 20th-century New York a magnet for cultural innovators, and the city’s embrace of bold individuality. Strausbaugh mentions a possible future subject: Victoria Woodhull. Please SUBSCRIBE! From NYPD Detective to Streetwise Communication: Anthony Celano on Role-Play Training, Leadership, and Workplace Conflict Dian interviews Anthony Celano, a former NYPD detective squad commander with 22 years of experience in organized crime and narcotics, about how he built StreetWise Communication Trainings after retiring and becoming a licensed private investigator. He explains transferable policing fundamentals—observation, inquiry, credibility, supervision, and de-escalation—plus techniques like feigning understanding to gather facts from both sides of a conflict. Celano also discusses trends including rising workplace hostility, the importance of fair, firm supervision and managing perceptions, and how client-specific training can surface hidden issues. From Philosophy to Psychology: Understanding Society's Fascination with Disturbing Themes with Jordan Conrad, Ph.D., LCSW

Why ‘Death Game’ Shows Hook Us: Wealth Gaps, Social Media, Trauma Loops & AI’s Impact | Dr. Jordan Conrad @SilverDisobedience host Dian Griesel interviews psychotherapist and philosopher Dr. Jordan Conrad about why “death game” stories like Squid Game and Hunger Games draw massive audiences. Conrad connects the genre to widening wealth gaps, the way incomprehensible riches distort perception, and social media’s click economy that pushes people to commodify themselves and chase status through risky or cruel behavior. They discuss Goodhart’s Law (when measures like money or clicks become targets), how groupthink and desperation make participants believe they can survive, and how dystopian class-warfare themes reflect alienation. The conversation shifts to art and life’s “looping effects,” how repeated personal stories can reinforce trauma schemas, why people struggle to express wants in relationships, concerns about AI outsourcing critical thinking and social skills, ADHD diagnoses and the factory model of education, and risks of therapist self-disclosure and political gatekeeping in psychotherapy. Divorce, Mediation Versus Litigation with Joe Dillon

Divorce Mediation vs. Attorneys: Joe Dillon on Saving Time, Money & Stress in “Silver Divorce” Sometimes we just can't get along and stay together. So, in this @SilverDisobedience Perception Dynamics podcast, Dian interviews divorce mediator Joe Dillon of Equitable Mediation. Joe shares how witnessing his parents’ litigated divorce in the 1980s shaped his mission to help families avoid years of conflict, high costs and emotional fallout. Joe explains the key differences between attorney-driven divorce -- where two advocates fight a zero-sum battle -- and mediation, where a neutral mediator helps both spouses develop solutions through full disclosure, option testing, and financial modeling. He discusses why some people resist mediation, including power imbalances, non-disclosure, substance abuse, and high-conflict dynamics, and notes men often initiate mediation more frequently. The conversation also covers “silver divorce,” why longer-term marriages tend to mediate more successfully, the five divorce options, how agreements are drafted and filed, mediation’s unregulated nature, and practical communication tactics for diffusing conflict. The Future of Heart Health, AI & Innovation with Dr. Ami Bhatt, FDA Chair, Digital Health Advisory Committee

AI, Wearables & Heart Health: Dr. Ami Bhatt on Personalized Prevention and Digital Medicine Host Dian Griesel aka @SilverDisobedience interviews Dr. Ami Bhatt, Chief Innovation Officer at the American College of Cardiology and chair of the FDA’s Digital Health Advisory Committee, about how AI and digital health can improve heart health. Dr. Bhatt explains why cardiology is well-suited to use AI due to its long history with data, imaging, and remote monitoring, and notes rising heart disease burden alongside a shrinking cardiology workforce. They discuss prevention, patient agency, and the role of wearables, emphasizing baselines, trends vs. “blips,” and managing health anxiety. Bhatt describes AI’s potential in ECG insights, cautions about limitations of large language models, and highlights promising innovation areas: drug/device discovery, agentic closed-loop systems for population health, and voice AI for post-discharge follow-up with clinician “rescue” pathways. Together, the interview further explores why fewer people enter medicine and the importance of the art and humanity of care. Exploring Bioenergetics with Dr. Sue Morter

Dr. Sue Morter on Bioenergetics: How Energy Flow, Emotion, and Perception Shape Health & Awakening Host Dian Griesel introduces Dr. Sue Morter as together they discuss how high performers often override bodily signals, potentially narrowing perception and harming health. Dr. Morter explains bioenergetics as the body’s natural energy flow — down through the body into the earth, rising back up and cycling in an external toric field—supporting nutrients, repair, hormones, and vitality. Consequently, when blocked by stress, unresolved emotion, or early-life shutdown patterns, stunted energy flow can contribute to lethargy, anxiety, depression, pain and distorted perception. Dr. Morter describes using breath, focused attention, and body awareness to build “circuitry” that restores flow through compressed areas rather than around them and in the process re-linking conscious and unconscious patterns. Together Dian & Dr. Morter reference research associating how unresolved events 18–24 months earlier can be at the root cause of illness. The discussion also explores Morter’s book, "The Anatomy of Awakening," including her meditation-based awakening experience and her view that awakening is physiological. Please SUBSCRIBE! Fixing Education: The Science of Learning with Dr. Kimberly Berens

Why School Isn’t Working: Dr. Kimberly Berens on the Science of Learning, Direct Instruction and Mastery Dian Griesel, host of the Silver Disobedience® Perception Dynamics™ podcast discusses rising ADD/ADHD diagnoses, frustration with education, and whether the problem lies with kids, teachers, or the system during this interview with learning scientist Dr. Kimberly Berens, author of "Blind Spots." Berens cites NAEP data showing about 70% of students below proficiency and historically low rates for graduating seniors. She argues that the system has long been ideological rather than grounded in the science of learning. Dr Berens calls for a primary-school overhaul: less content; explicit/direct instruction; structured practice with feedback and measurement; and, mastery-based progression rather than exposure-and-move-on and grade fixation. The conversation addresses phonics and decoding versus balanced literacy; critiques of "new math" tricks and over-reliance on calculators, while discussing how better instruction can reduce disengagement and mislabeling of learning disabilities. Dr. Berens further proposes practical steps for schools, including adopting Direct Instruction and building intentional practice into the school day. Please SUBSCRIBE!
