16: Aging Parents With Too Much Stuff? Help Them Declutter Without A Power Struggle or Hurting Their Feelings

The garage that’s filled with so many things that a car hasn’t parked there since 1992. Collections from hobbies that haven't been touched in over a decade in the room no one is allowed to touch. Box upon box upon box of old photos and papers… If you've ever walked into your parents' home and felt your chest tighten a little at the sheer amount of stuff while hoping and praying an additional storage unit doesn’t also exist somewhere, this episode is for you. And if you've tried to talk to them about decluttering, downsizing, or organizing their home and it turned into an argument, or they shut down completely, or they agreed just to get you to stop talking but never followed through, you know that this can be tricky. But it is possible to help your parents declutter in a way that respects their autonomy, protects your relationship, and maybe (just maybe) make progress so you won’t have to tackle all of their belongings later in life. In This Episode: Approach the decluttering conversation with how it will benefit them. Because while your reasons for wanting to help your parents declutter are probably very well meaning and  practical, leading with them can make your parents super defensive.  Why not asking for permission before you start touching their things will probably backfire.  What research shows is the most effective way to declutter with your aging parents.  The importance of letting them tell the stories behind the clutter (even if you don’t want to hear them).  Resources Mentioned: Free Decluttering and Decorating Guides: www.simplifiedhomedesign.com/free 1-1 Clear the Clutter session: www.simplifiedhomedesign.com/clear-the-clutter Next Steps: Grab the Decluttering and Organizing Quick Wins Guide or Home Clarity Guide at www.simplifiedhomedesign.com/free and get weekly tips, new ideas, updates, and more delivered to your inbox every Thursday. 15: Don't Declutter Your Home Until You Do This First

You’ve got the trash bag, the donation box, a good playlist, and the motivation to finally tackle that room today. Forty-five minutes in, you're surrounded by more piles than when you started, second-guessing every decision, and this whole decluttering and getting organized thing feels harder than it should. Before you touch another thing, let’s simplify decluttering and get clear on how you want the room to look, feel, and function.   In This Episode: Why decision fatigue derails decluttering attempts. Without a clear standard to measure things against, exhaustion can hit fast. Three questions to ask before you declutter any room. A simple exercise that turns vague goals like "cozy but uncluttered" into something more personalized and specific so you can strategically declutter.  What it means if you keep decluttering the same space. It's usually one of two things. Why you need a stopping time, not just a starting time. Decision fatigue sets in faster than you think, and pushing past it usually isn’t the best idea. A cheaper fix than buying new furniture. Sometimes the piece you've been searching for is already sitting in your garage. 14: Interior Design Mistakes Homeowners Make And How To Avoid Them

You've painted the walls, bought the furniture, hung the art. Your home should feel done. But something still feels unfinished and you can't quite put your finger on it. Most women blame their budget, or figure they never really nailed down their style. Usually it's one simple decorating misstep, and it's fixable without starting over. This episode walks through the interior design mistakes I see most often, why they affect you more than you'd think, and exactly what to do instead. In This Episode: Skipping a plan before you buy furniture is one of the most expensive mistakes you can make, and one of the easiest to avoid. The things you keep but don't love. Old furniture, hand-me-downs, or pieces tied to a relationship you've moved past… it’s time to get rid of those. Decorating for Jenny down the block. Choosing paint colors and furniture for resale value or someone else's opinion instead of your own style and preferences can keep you from truly loving your home.  The 75% finished room. Why stopping short of the last few touches keeps a space feeling unfinished. Bonus: what to do if your home feels like a random collection of stuff with no real style. 13: Your Decluttering Plan So Back To School Doesn't Mean Back To Chaos

August has a way of sneaking up on you. One minute it's the Fourth of July, and the next you're standing in a store surrounded by notebooks and pencils, wondering how summer went so fast and why your house looks like there was an explosion in every room. If you want this school year to feel like a fresh start instead of barely controlled chaos, this episode is for you. In This Episode: The four spaces that actually matter before school starts (hint: the closet you’ve been meaning to get to for the past 5 years isn't one of them). A 30-minute reset for clearing out everything left over from the last school. How to set up systems for backpacks, school papers, and homework so weekly meltdowns (Theirs? Yours? No judgment) aren’t happening like clockwork. A listener question about decluttering a kid's room when they don't want you touching their stuff, and a game that makes it easier for everyone. 12: Home Organization: The Self Care Routine You've Been Missing

You know about self care… It seems like it is everywhere right now. And maybe when you get a free moment, you’ll take the bubble bath, hit the yoga class, or book the pedicure. But that's the catch: scheduling self care assumes you have free time for it.  If you've tried all the things and still can't fully relax or catch your breath, the thing draining you might be the environment you're coming home to every day. I try to avoid talking in absolutes, but often the home stuff (decluttering, decorating, organizing, cleaning) falls on women. So if you're the woman who is always managing everything, and the one holding everything together, rest isn't optional. It's necessary. And having a decluttered, organized home can help you get that much needed rest.    Resources Mentioned: Clear the Clutter session: www.simplifiedhomedesign.com/clear-the-clutter Next Steps: Grab the Decluttering and Organizing Quick Wins Guide or Home Clarity Guide at www.simplifiedhomedesign.com/free and get weekly tips, new ideas, and updates delivered to your inbox every Thursday. 11: Decorating Ideas Not Matching Your Budget? 5 Ways to Create Your Dream Home Without a Billionaire Bank Account

You have a ton of decorating ideas. The saved Pinterest pins, the fabric and wallpaper samples, the “To Buy” list on your phone. There's just one problem: your dream home is priced about ten times higher than your actual budget.  That's a bummer, but it's not a deal breaker. This episode will walk you through how to make your home look and feel like your dream home, even if you don’t have access to Jeff Bezos’ bank account.  In This Episode: Make a plan before you touch your credit card. Skipping this step is how you end up with a house full of things that don't actually work together. The love it or loathe it list. A simple tool to make shopping decisions easier and keep you from second-guessing yourself in the store. Where to spend and where to save. The test for figuring out which two or three pieces in a room deserve the splurge money, and which ones don't. Why the ugliest piece at an estate sale might be exactly what your room needs. The decorating mistake that costs you the most.  What to get right before you start buying all of the throw pillows and decor.    Resources Mentioned: Want help building a decorating plan? 10: Zombie Decluttering: Try This When Your Husband or Kids Don't Want to Declutter

You cleaned the kitchen after dinner. You woke up to a tsunami. You asked your husband about donating the sports gear he hasn't touched in a decade. Crickets. You walked down the hall with a donation box and your kids suddenly needed every single thing in their room with a gladiator-level intensity. If decluttering in your house feels less like a team effort and more like a solo sport nobody else signed up for, this episode is going to change that. Because when you feel like you've tried everything, sometimes you need to change the game. Literally. In This Episode: Why family decluttering stalls...  it's not what you think The reason your husband and kids dig in their heels isn't stubbornness. It's often the fear of losing something that matters to them. Understanding that changes how you approach the whole conversation. Zombie Decluttering. The game I created for families who are tired of arguing about stuff. Everyone gets to protect what matters most to them. Yet somehow, a lot more leaves the house. Make it your own Zombies not your family's thing? Lord Voldemort works. So does Thanos. The theme is flexible. The concept isn't. What to do if your husband won't play A few strategies for the partner who shuts down the conversation entirely.   Resources Mentioned: Free Decluttering and Decorating Guides: www.simplifiedhomedesign.com/free 1-1 Clear the Clutter session: www.simplifiedhomedesign.com/clear-the-clutter   Next Steps: 1.If you like the podcast, please leave a review. 09: 5 Ways Good Interior Design Makes Your Life Easier

You’ve probably been told that interior design is about making your home look beautiful. And sure, that’s part of it. But what nobody talks about is that good design can make your life feel easier. Mornings run smoother, you can actually find things, and you walk through the door at the end of a long day and feel relieved instead of stressed.    In This Episode: Good interior design isn’t just about decorating a shelf or buying new furniture; it’s about how your home can help you.  Because your home is affecting how you feel, how clearly you think, and how well you rest every single day.  There’s significant research behind why cluttered, poorly designed spaces make us feel anxious, distracted, and drained... even when we’re not consciously thinking about them. So, let's fix that.   Resources Mentioned: Free Decluttering and Decorating Guides: www.simplifiedhomedesign.com/free   1-1 Clear the Clutter session: www.simplifiedhomedesign.com/clear-the-clutter   Next Steps: Rate the podcast.
