Carrie Sheffield: Escaping a Cult, PTSD, and Finding Healing & Forgiveness in Christ | STF Podcast Ep. 22

In this episode of the Faith in the Furnace series, host Lara Silverman sits down with journalist, author, and musician Carrie Sheffield to discuss surviving childhood trauma, religious abuse, mental illness in her family, and finding healing through Christ. Carrie shares what it was like growing up as the fifth of eight children in a violent, unstable motorhome lifestyle under her father’s extremist “prophet” claims connected to an offshoot LDS belief system. She attended 17 schools, performed classical music on the streets, and endured severe trauma, including sexual assault and emotional abuse. Despite her circumstances, Carrie excelled academically—scoring in the top 1% on both the ACT and the ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) trauma scale. She opens up about her struggles with PTSD, depression, anxiety, fibromyalgia, and the painful cost of leaving home at 18, including being disowned by her father. Carrie also discusses her years as an agnostic before becoming a Protestant Christian in 2017, and how faith, forgiveness, boundaries, mentors, and trauma-informed mental health tools helped her begin rewiring deeply rooted beliefs shaped by abuse. The conversation explores topics like generational trauma, healing the subconscious mind, somatic therapy, music’s role in healing, and the difference between forgiveness and reconciliation. She also shares about her nonprofit, Healthy Faith, her Bible and mental health conferences, co-writing the song “My Heavenly Father Is,” and the ways she has seen God redeem suffering and restore what trauma tried to destroy. Michelle shares her testimony as a childhood survivor of a Christian-claiming cult from ages 7–12, describing spiritual, emotional, and sexual abuse, the impact on her faith, and how her family left after the leader was exposed and her father (serving overseas) learned what had happened. She explains rebuilding faith through surrender during a difficult divorce while pregnant, finding support in a biblically sound church, experiencing Holy Spirit-led emotional healing, and pursuing Christian therapy after a Lexapro overdose revealed unresolved trauma. Mischelle discusses discerning the true Jesus through Scripture, forgiveness, justice, and how God redeemed her story into women’s ministry. Lori Schumaker on Chronic Illness, Special-Needs Adoption, and Hope When God Says No | STF Podcast Ep. 20

In this episode, host Lara Silverman continues her “Faith in the Furnace” series with Christian life and mental health coach, author, and Unveiling Hope founder, Lori Schumaker, who shares a testimony shaped by abortion and years of shame, abusive marriage, and chronic illness (including cystinuria with severe kidney stones, Hashimoto’s, migraines, fibromyalgia, extensive food allergies, and black mold toxicity.) Lori explains how suffering deepened her relationship with Jesus, why lament is valid but getting stuck is not, and how “habits of hope,” gratitude, Scripture, and replacing lies with truth can rewire thought patterns. She discusses parenting her adopted daughter from Bulgaria with profound special needs, wrestling with God’s “no,” caregiving burdens, and how God sustains through supernatural strength and filling gaps. Lori reflects on Romans 8:28, Psalm 84, spiritual warfare, boundaries, and finding joy through surrender, disciplined choices, and God’s presence. Dr. Mark Jones on Spiritual Warfare and Surrender Amid Suffering | STF Podcast Ep. 19

In this episode, host Lara Silverman begins the Theology in the Fire series with Mark Jones, a former dentist and longtime prayer pastor and elder at Mana House in Portland, Oregon. He teaches on prayer, intimacy with God, surrender, and spiritual warfare. Mark shares how years of offense and bitterness toward two church leaders became his entry point into understanding spiritual warfare, culminating in a confession and reconciliation during communion that brought freedom. He explains spiritual warfare basics and stresses that believers can be influenced though not possessed. Rather than fixating on deliverance or the devil, he argues surrender and intimacy with God are the primary strategy for resisting Satan’s lies, taking thoughts captive, and walking in daily grace, offering practical guidance for beginning each morning by greeting God, surrendering, receiving God’s love, and committing to consistent time with the Lord. In this episode, host Lara Silverman continues the “Faith in the Furnace” series on Singing Through Fire with entrepreneur, podcast host, and former bivocational pastor Matthew Efird who shares his family’s testimony of suffering and faith. Matthew recounts learning during his wife’s pregnancy that their son Noah had Trisomy 13, the months of anticipatory grief, and Noah’s birth on March 7, 2020 and death on March 9, including God’s mercies surrounding timing just before COVID shutdowns. He describes praying for healing, moving toward costly acceptance, lament through tears, Scripture, worship, and community, and reframing Noah as “fully healed” in Christ. Matthew also discusses their oldest son Walker’s genetic epilepsy, wrestling with anger, relinquishing control, taking life one day at a time, and encouraging careful empathy that points sufferers to God’s character. *Chapters* 00:00 Meet Matthew Efird 02:06 Noah Diagnosis Journey 05:04 Birth Loss And Mercy 06:43 Faith Under Unanswered Prayer 11:14 Costly Acceptance And Surrender 14:22 Is God Still Faithful 19:56 Abraham Isaac and Why 23:25 Lament and Grief Practices 27:21 Holding Joy and Sorrow 28:38 Permission for Joy 29:35 Healing Hole Metaphor 31:02 Surrendering Control 32:55 Feeling God in Grief 35:24 Honoring Noah’s Life 40:04 Hope and Key Verses 41:44 Thankful Through Loss 44:55 God Outside of Time 50:18 Walker’s Epilepsy Journey 55:45 Trusting God’s No 58:34 Empathy Without Harm 01:00:44 Final Blessing Matthew's new book, Even Though, We Will Matthew's Facebook Matthew's LinkedIn Matthew's Website Matthew's podcast on YouTube Matthew's podcast on Spotify Watch the Singing Through Fire podcast on YouTube. Jim Burgoon on Mental Illness, Loss, and Trusting God When God Says No | STF Podcast Ep. 17

In this episode, Lara Silverman welcomes Jim Burgoon—strategist for Faith-Driven Leaders, host of the Unshakeable Life Podcast, military veteran, and former pastor—to share his “faith in the furnace” story, centered on his wife’s decades-long battle with four major mental illnesses, recurring hospitalizations, and a near-suicide attempt while raising children and leading in ministry. Jim describes the church’s frequent lack of support and stigma around mental illness, his 2017 decision to step down and relocate for better care, and how surrendering control to Christ sustained him. The conversation addresses asking “why,” lament, and rejecting prosperity/word-of-faith formulas, emphasizing that God’s “no” can be about timing or eternity. Jim also recounts losing his mother and sister to cancer in 2023, a suicide attempt by his wife, and his own chronic illness, highlighting hope, truth over feelings, and trusting God’s goodness through suffering. Jim's Bio Jim Burgoon is a strategist for faith-driven leaders, podcast hosts, and content creators.  He is the host of The Unshakable Life Podcast. A military veteran who is certified as both a Leadership Development Coach and DISC consultant, Jim helps leaders stop hiding and start building. Jim’s approach shifts the focus from "earning your worth" to stewarding your calling. Whether he is coaching on content strategy, leadership development, or deep spiritual health, his mission is simple: to help you build a purpose-rooted life that stands firm when the world gets chaotic. Is God's Grace Really Sufficient? | STF Podcast Ep. 16

In this episode of Singing Through Fire, Lara Silverman speaks to listeners who feel overwhelmed, afraid, and unsure they can keep going, and prays for God’s comfort. She challenges the idea that “God will never give you more than you can handle,” showing from Scripture that God sometimes allows burdens beyond our strength so we will rely on Him, citing Paul, Elijah, Job, Jeremiah, and even Jesus’ anguish before the cross. Lara centers the episode on 2 Corinthians 12:9—God’s grace is sufficient and His power is made perfect in weakness—along with other passages about God sustaining His people. She shares her testimony of being bedridden for years with severe vertigo, learning to depend on God one moment at a time, and describes God’s provision through timely verses, daily strength, and “rest stops.” She also recounts seeing God sustain her husband Matt through stage-four cancer, ending with hope in eternity and God’s promise to preserve believers’ faith to the end. Finding Your Voice Again: Chronic Pain, Lost Identity, and Praying Scripture with Melissa McLaughlin | STF Podcast Ep. 15

In this episode, host Lara Silverman continues the “Faith in the Furnace” series with Melissa McLaughlin, a writer, teacher, and speaker who retired early after debilitating chronic back pain from deteriorating discs forced her out of a beloved teaching career, exposing how much her identity was tied to work and capability. Melissa shares how suffering and dependence on others led her to rediscover her true identity as God’s child, even as she felt God’s silence and lost words to pray. She describes using Psalms and other passages as spoken prayers, collecting and rewriting verses into scripture-based prayers, and developing a prayer framework of praise, thanksgiving, confession, petitions, and ending in God’s strength, later shared in her book “In Dark of Night When Words Fail.” They discuss God’s sovereignty, spiritual warfare, eternal perspective, and Melissa’s second book, “The Whole Bible Devotional,” which helps readers see Jesus throughout Scripture.
