The Hidden Cost of Employee Turnover (And Why Development Is Cheaper)

Employee turnover is often treated as a normal part of doing business. But what if it’s one of the most expensive decisions an organization makes? In this episode of Sip on This, we explore a question every business owner and leader eventually faces: Is it cheaper to replace an employee or develop them? Research from the Society for Human Resource Management suggests that replacing an employee can cost six to nine months of their salary, and in many mid-level roles, that number climbs to 100–150% of annual pay once recruiting, training, lost productivity, and team disruption are factored in. Yet many organizations default to replacement instead of development. In this episode, we discuss: • The real financial cost of employee turnover • Why employees actually leave organizations • The hidden cultural damage caused by constant rehiring• How career coaching inside organizations can increase engagement and retention • The leadership mindset shift required to build stronger teams. Because turnover may feel normal — but it’s expensive. And sometimes the most costly decision a leader makes is failing to invest in the people they already have. If you're a business owner, manager, or HR leader thinking about retention strategy, this conversation may change how you view development. Sip on that. Coaching Is Not a Hobby: What a Career Coach Actually Does (Second Act Conversations): Sip on this ☕️

Coaching is not a hobby — it’s a profession. In this episode of Sip on This, I break down what a career coach actually does, who coaching is for, and why working with a trained, certified coach matters. If you’ve ever felt stuck, burnt out, unsure of your next move, or capable of more but uncertain how to get there, this conversation is for you. We discuss real-world scenarios where coaching makes a difference, including career stagnation, second-act transitions, job-search burnout, impostor syndrome, boundary issues, and decision fatigue. I also share my professional journey — from licensed hairstylist and educator to executive leadership to ICF-certified coach — and why I chose to do this work the right way. This episode also clarifies the difference between coaching and therapy, and explains why credentialing and ethics matter in the coaching profession. I discuss two globally recognized coaching credentialing bodies: the International Coaching Federation and the International Association of Coaching, and why proper training makes a real difference in the quality of guidance you receive. If any of the scenarios discussed resonate with you, coaching may be the support you didn’t realize you needed. It’s not about being broken — it’s about being ready for growth.☕ Learn more about coaching, explore resources, or book a free discovery session at Coaching with Ms. D. https://www.coachingwithmsd.com/post/overcoming-imposter-syndromehttps://www.coachingwithmsd.com/post/strategies-to-overcome-people-pleasing-free-download Disclosure: As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases: Gray turtle neck: https://amzn.to/4to7vmrJournals: https://amzn.to/4qhni3sCosmetology guide: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CH775V9NProducts on page:Mug: https://www.coachingwithmsd.com/product-page/sip-on-this-white-glossy-mugJournal: https://www.coachingwithmsd.com/product-page/hardcover-journal 🎧 Available on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts Now streaming:🎧 Listen on 👉 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6DvNCOUFDxWeM34zMnCcNf?si=wk3oTJwtTc-XlT389uxlDwApple Podcasts:  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sip-on-this-with-coaching-with-ms-d/id1843231306  YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@coachingwithmsd A Professional Career, Life, and Relationship Coach is here for YOU. From Grief to Service: Sip on This – Hospice, Dignity & Volunteering

When both of your parents die side by side in hospice care, it changes you forever. In this deeply personal episode of Sip on This, host Deirdre Haggerty shares the true story of losing her father to pancreatic cancer and her mother to complications from Alzheimer’s disease—just two days apart, in their living room, on hospice care. That experience moved her from grief to service: fundraising for the Alzheimer’s Association and volunteering as a hospice companion. To explore what hospice really is, Deirdre is joined by Gail Rabstein, CDP, Director of Volunteers and Interns at Embracing Hospice Care. Together, they talk about what meaningful companionship looks like at the end of life, how volunteers support both patients and families, and why hospice is about much more than “giving up.” Gail shares powerful stories of music, presence, and connection, and explains how Embracing Hospice Care’s holistic, family-owned approach supports mind, body, and spirit. You’ll hear about: What hospice care truly is—and what it isn’t How volunteers bring dignity, comfort, and human connection to patients The different ways people can volunteer (including remote roles) Common myths and misconceptions about hospice How hospice teams support overwhelmed families making impossible decisions If hospice care is part of your story, if you’re caring for aging parents, living with Alzheimer’s in the family, or if you’ve ever wondered whether volunteering in hospice might be for you, this conversation is a window into the beauty, pain, and purpose found in one of life’s most vulnerable chapters.
