    Bilingualism in SLP Practice

In July 2026, I had a chat with Jen, a bilingual English-Spanish speech-language pathologist from the United States. When you listen to the episode, you’ll understand why I think Jen is a “Super SLP”. Not only does she work bilingually across the lifespan, but she’s also pursuing doctoral research about bilingual SLP practice, focusing on monolingual SLPs working with culturally and linguistically diverse clients. In this episode, Jen shares about the discrepancy between the number of bilingual SLPs in the United States and the population of multilingual speakers in the country, considerations when providing assessment and intervention for culturally and linguistically diverse clients, and guidance for where to access further resources.  She also shares about her personal journey of becoming bilingual, overseas travels that helped develop her second language skills, and the importance of holding pride in her bicultural and bilingual identity, particularly in the United States in 2026.  You can find Jen on Instagram.  Some of the resources mentioned in this episode include: Topi Topi Bilingual Therapy Bilingual Speechie The Bilingual Extension Program at Columbia University A note on assessment: the PLS-5 was normed across the United States and Puerto Rico. The GFTA - 3 Spanish uses a pan-Hispanic approach, normed on a diverse group of Spanish speakers across the United States, Puerto Rico, Central America and the Caribbean.  SLPs Overseas is an independently produced podcast. I record, edit and publish episodes while working full-time as an SLP (and travelling, of course!)
