    Miwa Nagato-Apthorp

    Today, Andy Reilly chats to To Miwa Nagato-Apthorp. Based in the Scottish Borders, Miwa’s songwriting draws on folk traditions to explore multicultural understandings of history, climate, womanhood, and home. This chat was recorded in mid April so some of the gigs mentioned are now in the past, though Miwa can be found playing at this year’s Knockengorroch, Kelburn Garden Party, and a special Co-Bill with Lainey Dempsey – at Glad Radio’s ‘Thrown In Sessions’ at The Deep End, in the southside of Glasgow They talk about Miwa recently supporting Eddi Reader, going from playing venues like The Glad Cafe to bigger spaces like the Royal Concert Hall, making each gig feel like a community get together, the joy of collaboration, and the mysterious process of songwriting.     Carla J Easton

    Andy Reilly chats to Carla J Easton about her great new album, I Think I Might Love You.  Carla talks about how it came about that she created her first ‘guitar album’ after all these years focusing on playing keys, an impromptu flight to Nashville invigorating her song writing, being part of a family of incredible women songwriters – what she calls the Sonic Sisterhood. She talks about the girls with guitars who inspired her, including Gem and The Holograms, and staying inspired after 20 years in music. It’s a good, long in-depth chat – they also speak about legacy, what constitutes success, the thread of friendship and much much more.     HELICON x AL LOVER

    Andy Reilly chats to JP of Scottish psychedelic band Helicon and Al Lover. Al Lover if you don’t know is an experimental producer from Los Angeles, who specialises in a synthesis of trip hop, krautrock, boom bap, and dub. Two very different worlds. They have collaborated on what JP calls their most accessible record yet, Arise. They talk about them both working across the two very different cultures and approaches to style. Pushing outside your own natural boundaries to find fresh territory. Making a vastly broad sounding album cohesive. They also get into the thorny issue of just what is psychedelic music? They get into the nuts and bolts of making the record, so there’s a good bit of chatting about the ins and outs of how they work in the studio and build their tracks, as well as working with Chris Geddes of Belle & Sebastian.  They also chat about playing King Tut’s, potentially winning over Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s fans at their appearance at Kendal Calling later this year, and much more. They speak about her relationship to the new album, Dreams of the Machine, with being more fully involved in the band than she was previously.  They also chat about, in the early age of AI, what it means to be human in these times – the positives and negatives of AI.
