106: The Half of It (2020)

This week we are joined by Ceri Riley to discuss the Netflix original film The Half of It. This coming of age dramedy was a combination of a number of story elements that felt pretty calibrated for us to love it and we loved talking about it almost as much as the movie itself.

105: The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins

This episode was recorded about a month ago and our decision to re-read The Hunger Games was made well before we had any notion of being quarantined. We decided to do a big group re-read of The Hunger Games on our Discord server in anticipation of the upcoming release of the prequel novel. We invited our friend Sam (@democracydiva) back on the show to talk to us about all things Hunger Games. We talked about our history with the series, PTSD, whether or not it holds up, the fashion, and so much more.

Fun

I came to this podcast from Marines’s YouTube channel. Her and Nicole are friendship goals haha.

It’s OK

I’ll start off by saying that if this podcast puts out an episode on a show/movie I’m interested in, I almost always listen to it and I usually enjoy it. The hosts are engaging and pleasant and the guests they have are usually so as well.

But that’s kind of related to why I’d say the show is OK, but not great. It’s usually a pleasant discussion of a work of media, and by pleasant I don’t mean that they never say anything critical of that media, because they do. But I feel like in many episodes the criticisms are rote and obligatory, and they don’t really go very in-depth with them. That’s probably difficult when you’re talking about something new every week, but it just seems like there’s something lacking.

And also, it’s called Snark Squad, but I would expect more snark than there usually is if it’s part of the title.

All in all, this is a pretty good show that I will listen to in a pinch if I don’t have anything else. Not the best, but very far from the worst. I’ll listen to this over a low-effort celebrity podcast any day.

Fun and wonderful

I enjoy so much sitting down every week to listen. They're funny and delighful and it feels so friendly, like I'm talking with friends. I really laugh aloud and the podcast always leaves me smiling. These are great discusions about pop culture, very smart.

You go Snark Squad!
