While His Newborn Son Was in ICU, Mark Couldn’t Stop Gambling (Subscriber Exclusive)

Mark Kempster doesn’t remember the final two years of his ten-year battle with gambling harm. Not just because he was constantly consumed by betting, but because he was physically and mentally locked into his phone, chasing the next bet. Even during monumental life moments, like the birth of his premature son, who was in ICU, he was still gambling from the hospital. What really kept him trapped wasn’t just the betting, it was the secrecy, the lies and the shame. Mark has now made it his life’s mission to advocate for change. It’s important to note that people who advocate in this space are often working within a deeply thankless system. Gambling harm advocacy is one of the only sectors where funding is either non-existent or extremely limited, meaning many of these voices are self-funded and driven purely by a desire to help others. Masking ADHD and Drinking Through Grief: Jasmine's Story

Jasmine grew up knowing something didn’t feel right in her home. The good days with her father felt like everything. The bad days felt unbearable. At 15, she witnessed him attempt to take his own life in front of her and her siblings, and from that moment she began using alcohol to cope with what she couldn’t process. Years later, she was still carrying it all. Moving through her twenties and early thirties with low self-worth, drinking to regulate emotions she never learned how to sit with, until one moment, bottles of wine deep, sitting on the floor after a breakup, forced her to question everything. Jasmine opens up about receiving a diagnosis of ADHD and OCD in her thirties, masking for years without knowing why, the loneliness that can come with sobriety and what it has taken to slowly rebuild her sense of self. Laura Was Doing Cocaine Daily, Then Her Nose Started to Collapse (Subscriber Exclusive)

Laura never fell head over heels for alcohol like many of us who listen to this podcast did, but she absolutely took to drugs. From MDMA to cocaine, substance use became tied to a toxic relationship and eventually survival itself. After leaving that relationship with nothing, Laura found herself drug dealing to get by. Alongside police scares, the real wake-up call came when years of cocaine use severely damaged her septum, leaving a hole in her nose that she became deeply self-conscious about. Today, through sobriety, Laura is a personal trainer helping people struggling with addiction create healthier habits and routines. I wanted to ask her about the small habits that actually matter in those first few months of sobriety, and how you start rebuilding from the ground up. Extreme violence, coercive control, and fear shaped Peter’s childhood, but home wasn’t the only place he was unsafe. At school, he experienced SA at the hands of a male teacher.  Desperate to escape the violence, Peter found himself homeless at a young age. But after a tragic accident led to the loss of an innocent young life, Peter was sentenced to life in prison, believing his own life was effectively over too. Instead, prison became the place where Peter began to change.  Peter is now a passionate advocate for domestic violence and coercive control. Jennifer Watched Footage of Her Mother’s Murder Through a Ring Camera (Subscriber Exclusive)

Jennifer Gaydos Hartman was working in mental health when a conversation with her stepfather immediately rang alarm bells. Not long after, she would be watching Ring camera footage of him murdering her mother, before taking his own life. But even before that moment, Jennifer’s life had already been shaped by trauma, mental health struggles, and addiction. The father of her children suffered a drug-induced accident that left him with severe cognitive impairments, and she also experienced the shock of finding her best friend dead in his home. And in a surprising contrast, Jennifer is also known for her time on reality TV, appearing on The Real Housewives of Dallas, which we briefly chinwag about at the end of the episode. 6. Why Can’t I Moderate? with Addiction Psychiatrist Dr Daniel Hochman (Subscriber Exclusive)

Why Can’t I Moderate? with Addiction Psychiatrist Dr Daniel Hochman (Subscriber Exclusive)

Dr Daniel Hochman is a board-certified addiction psychiatrist who specialises in understanding the emotional and psychological drivers behind substance use. As the first doctor on the show, I had questions that continuously come up in my interviews, but I was hesitant to ask them in case they seemed too “basic” to bring to a doctor. But I realised pretty quickly these aren’t basic questions at all, they’re the ones we all end up asking at some point in our journey. Like, why can’t we moderate? Is addiction a genetic trait? And why do some people keep using even when they know it’s ruining their lives? This conversation was incredibly insightful, and I’m so grateful for Dr Hochman’s time. I hope you enjoy this chat with Dr Daniel Hochman. The Cycle of Violence and Abandonment: Luke's Story

Growing up around addiction, instability and an absent father shaped the course of Luke’s life long before he understood it. In this episode, Luke speaks openly about avoiding accountability and the impact his behaviour had on the people around him during the darkest periods of his life. Beneath it all was a lifelong search for love, validation and escape. TRIGGER WARNING: This episode discusses suicide, mental health struggles, violence and domestic violence. Please watch with care. Childhood Trauma and a Three-Day Exorcism: Danny’s Story (Subscriber Exclusive)

Experiencing sexual abuse as a young child, unfortunately, isn’t unique in Danny’s family. The women in her lineage carry their own stories too. In this episode, we explore what going through something like that at such a young age does to a person, not feeling safe, not being believed, and how those experiences ripple into adulthood. By just 12 years old, Danny had already been exposed to gambling harm, turning to pokies as a way to self-soothe. She later faced eating disorders, serious mental health breakdowns, and a three-day exorcism. TRIGGER WARNING: this episode discusses suicide and touches on themes some may find confronting, including spirituality and experiences that sit outside the norm.
