The People Around Us

Darren Payne, David Nancarrow & Gary O'Donnell

(Formerly The 'Some Elbow Room' Podcast) There are so many ways to live a life and this podcast is testament to that!  Our conversations are honest, fun, reflective and interesting and we hope to inspire our listeners who may be a bit stuck in their work to stop and think about what they really want in life - to create “some elbow room”.  Specifically, to put some time aside to really think about:  (1) How their current job suits their personality  (2) The impact it is having on their own wellbeing & happiness and  (3) The influence it is having on the relationships most important in their life.  Our guest’s stories unfold key moments of change. Often influenced by their work, we talk about how those changes have impacted their lives. Whether our guest recognised an opportunity or had a plan, said yes instead of no or just fell on their feet - their lives often turned for the better! We also discuss how being part of a group or community is important to feeling that sense of belonging and how much belonging influences one’s happiness and wellbeing. This podcast may even inspire you to seek it out if you don’t have it in your life. Our guests show there are many ways to live a life and finding a balance between ambition, hard work and fun is the place to be!  This is what we explore from all directions and more on the “The People Around Us” Podcast. Enjoy!

  1. EPISODE 1

Why 'Some Elbow Room' Podcast Was Created

This episode goes behind the scenes with Darren Payne - the creator and co-host of 'Some Elbow Room' Podcast - who explains how the idea come about and is now a reality. Primarily, we hope the podcast encourages people to put some time aside to really think about (1) How their current job suits their personality (2) The impact it is having on their own health & happiness and (3) How much influence it is having on the relationships most important in their life.   Along with that, the life stories of our guests are interesting and fun with lots of ups and downs. It is through these stories we show that there are "many ways to live a life" and how important it is to have that sense of belonging to a social / community / friendship  group. Changing it up and saying yes to change  - even small ones - is much better than existing in a job and life that makes you unhappy.  This episode talks about all of that and more exploring how that idea has now been born into a living, breathing podcast. The Loyal, Misunderstood, AFL Footy Hard Man - Dean Wallis - Part A

Dean Wallis was simply unbelievable to talk to.  As outsiders looking in, he's lived a life between fiercely being himself and fighting against the system he found himself in as a young fella and now finds himself in as an adult. He is Pragmatic. A family man. Super honest. Divisive. Misunderstood albeit only by those not close. Clever. Loyal. Talented. Lucky yet unlucky. Loves to party. Hard-worker. Loves his mates - so much!!  A man's man from the old school but also now the 'new' way of being a man with vulnerability and open communication.   We seriously couldn't have been more impressed.  As an Australian Rules footballer, he had a career that no doubt frustrated him at times given the injuries and the perception of him amongst opposition supporters and even within in his own. Yet, a career so enviable to many!  Two Premierships says it all. Having said that,  he got his most enjoyment out of bringing people together at amateur footy level being a part of and creating a sense of belonging for himself and so many others.  Yet another example of how important this is for all of us which Dean touches on. He has experienced many human emotions and he talks about them all in this podcast. Depression, being adopted, passing away 3 times after a heart attack only to survive, perspective, loss, loyalty given and challenged and how important it is to be part of something. Anything.   Thanks Wally. ----------------------- Produced & Edited by Darren Payne Socials Instagram: @someelbowroompodcast Facebook: someelbowroompodcast Twitter: @somelbowrmpod Acknowledgments Jon Worthy's song "It comes with time" Jean-Marc Michaud's song "Happy Like a Duck" Musictown song "Fun Times Together" (Pixaboy) Contact If you would like to contact us to provide feedback, advertise, become a sponsor, suggest a guest OR have a chat about how you might be able to create 'Some Elbow Room' for yourself, please do so to Darren Payne via email darren@thecollectiveeffect.com.au

Peter Rowsthorn is an Australian Stand-Up Comedian, Actor, Writer, MC and Host who has been in our lives on TV, stage & screen for almost 40 years !! He is incredibly funny, unique, animated, bit loose yet considered, aware and loyal. However, it's the selfless decisions he's made along the way throughout his working life putting his family's interest first that make him the man he is today as a proud family man.  Very much ahead of his time, Peter has also always made work-life balance a priority and talk about that and the importance of it. He is very open about his childhood and also where things are at for him now as a parent and he has had numerous things he has had to get through off camera.
