The Black Women Who Changed Dance Forever | SoulCast

Dance has always been more than movement. For generations of Black women, it has been expression, resistance, culture, and power. In this special Women’s History Month episode of SoulCast, we honor the groundbreaking dancers whose courage and artistry helped transform the world of dance and open doors for the generations that followed. From the international stage to the classical ballet world, these women redefined what was possible. In this episode, we explore the legacy of: • Josephine Baker – the electrifying performer who became one of the first Black women to achieve international fame through dance and later used her platform to fight for civil rights. • Katherine Dunham – the visionary dancer, choreographer, and anthropologist who brought African diaspora dance traditions to global stages and created the revolutionary Dunham Technique. • Janet Collins – the fearless ballerina who refused to erase her identity and became the first Black prima ballerina at the Metropolitan Opera. • Debbie Allen – the legendary performer, choreographer, and cultural leader who helped shape generations of dancers and expanded representation in film, television, and theater. • Misty Copeland – the groundbreaking ballerina who became the first Black principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre, inspiring a new generation to see themselves in classical ballet. Together, these women didn’t just perform on stage. They reshaped the world of dance, challenged barriers, and created space for Black dancers to be seen, celebrated, and remembered. This episode is a tribute to the women who danced before us—and a reminder that every movement carries history.
