A Toast to Allyship: Finding Community with Bourbon

A Toast to Allyship: Finding Community with Bourbon

Content Warning: This episode features controversial language from an individual who is still growing in their LGBTQ allyship journey. We are choosing not to alter his words. Part of what we do on SQ is have hard, honest conversations and that means not policing guests’ language if they are sincerely trying to be supportive of the LGBTQ+ community.
Y’all we move beyond our queer echo chamber and talk to an actual straight, white, male. Randy Sullivan of Bourbon Real Talk chats with India about growing beyond ingrained homophobia, becoming an ally, and using bourbon as a common ground to build diverse communities.
Honestly, Aubree knows nothing about bourbon, so after listening to this she did what she always does, and found a book on the subject. We recommend: The Bourbon Bible, and it is entirely possible that Alyson is getting this queer bourbon shirt for her birthday.*

Part two of our talk with Professor Alejandra Marquez about LGBTQ Latin American culture!
We talk to one or India’s childhood friends from San Miguel, and current Assistant Professor or Spanish at Michigan State University. She researches and teaches about Latin American Queer culture, wome, books, and film.
The episode is an endearing catch-up between two old friends, and a continuation of our look at Mexican queer and straight culture. This is second episode of our talk with Ale, so you may want to hear the previous episode first. And make sure you give her podcast, Hablemos
Escritorias. We have listed some of the books Dr. Marqez mentioned below.

    We‘re Back! Hello, 2022!

    We‘re Back! Hello, 2022!

India and Aubree talk about how beautiful and fun (and COVID safe) India and Alyson’s wedding was. And we spend a lot of time talking about how genuinely great India’s mom is. And we admit that putting out a podcast as life starts to return to normal can be difficult as a small two person team. We have so many great episodes coming up in 2022 and we’re excited to be back!
Since Aubree explained Ungrading so poorly, you can learn more about it in Susan Bloom’s edited book on the subject, Ungrading: Why Rating Students Undermine Learning.
If you’re planning your own LGBTQ Wedding, Kirsten Palladino’s book,  Equally Wed: The Ultimate Guide to Planning Your LGBTQ+ Wedding, is the gold standard book to check out.

Queer Culture in Mexico with Mila Villasana

Queer Culture in Mexico with Mila Villasana

We talk to one of India’s best friends, Mila Villasana, a freelance Mexican illustrator and designer. These long time friends talk about finding their queer identities and how it intersects with their Mexican identities, developing a sense of community, growing up in Mexico, and the country’s shifting LGBTQ culture. Yes, Aubree’s here too, but it is mainly a sweet catch up between two friends! You can see some of Mila’s work on Instagram at @misskiwifish.
To learn more about Mexican lesbian culture, we’d like to recommend: Tortilleras Negotiating Intimacy: Love, Friendship, and Sex in Queer Mexico City by Anahi Russo Garrido -https://amzn.to/3kaTxSL and the new book, Wild Hearts Can’t Be Tamed: 15 Voices from the Latinx Diaspora https://amzn.to/3q9HbhM, both are available on Amazon and our Bookshop.org page*.
And here’s the reference to the history of the lesbian flag that the Queer Godmother mentioned in the conversation: https://www.nonchalantmagazine.com/the-full-history-of-the-lesbian-flag/

Best Queer Podcast

India and Aubree are creating such a unique space in queer dialogue- one that is desperately needed. Queer folx in the south have to stick together and that’s exactly what they’re doing with Southern Queeries. Building community is the best way to protect each other. I’m so proud to have been a guest on this podcast!

Hits close to home

A a fellow Floridian, this was a great listen and great to know more about the queer community in FL. I grew up with Disney (listened to the latest episode) and so this hit close to home! I grew up as a queer person of color in FL but never really found my community so this is really great to hear about other people in the Florida queer community.

So informative

As a non-Southern queer, I really love hearing this perspective. So interesting and the hosts have great chemistry.
