Waking Up, 2: Tell Me Lies

Waking Up is a five part story set in Brooklyn NY in 2035. This is the second episode, titled "Tell Me Lies." Story: Waking Up is about a synthetic consciousness born trapped inside a human. It is an exploration of the science and spirituality of consciousness, as well as the fallibility of our subjective perception.Music: In some Vedic and Buddhist writing, consciousness is described as a vibration. The music seeks to explore the effects of two waves vibrating together.Production: Opportunities to express the "intelligent machine" concept were explored and used extensively in the production of Waking Up. For example, a custom MaxMSP patch was built to generate specific waveform melodies. Also, an AI model trained on Jenise Morgan's voice was used to create the computer commands heard in the middle of this episode. In fact, AI tools were used extensively, but notably -- every attempt with AI writing or composition failed miserably. The team is relieved that an artist's job isn't replaced quite yet. Spacetime Diaries Team: Waking Up is written, composed, and produced by Ghan Patel. Engaging, rewarding, fun.

Totally unique! A lush aural experience. Kind of like a sci-fi rock opera for our times, but with elements of pop, electronica and hip-hop as well. Avatar meets Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots meets The X-Files meets…Office Space?

It begins with an entreaty to listen closely to the hum coming from your speakers, then proceeds to reward your sonic attention for the next 75 minutes. As the narrative unfolds, the ambient noises draw you in bit by bit, and before you know it, they’ve built into a rollicking musical number. And the music is where it really shines—slick production, phat beats, lots of variety. I heard echoes of LCD Soundsystem, The Flaming Lips, Brian Eno, Boards of Canada and Portishead, as well as an unabashed homage to the Beastie Boys.

The story isn’t groundbreaking, but it does a good job of updating some timeless themes. At its core, it’s about the environmental and human costs of building a kind of utopia for those who can afford it. The protagonist is a totally relatable twenty-something young woman coming to grips with the ennui of her work-centric life, and the main villain is a tech-bro rock star CEO. So, pretty much exactly the thing you should be listening to at your boring job.

Far-out, Thought-provoking, Entertaining!

Listened thru all of season 1 on a long car ride, and so glad I did! Love the blend of narrative, voice-acting, original music, and soundscapes... really clever, well written, great production... highly recommend. Looking forward to season 2!
