    John Kevill & Carlos Cruz

    John Kevill & Carlos Cruz

WARBRINGER vocalist John Kevill and drummer Carlos Cruz join Speak N’ Destroy for our 50th (!) episode.

The duo share a dense knowledge and passion for the genre and dive in here on the chemistry, serendipity, and near scientific structure that makes Metallica and bands like Slayer, Bathory, and Kreator, so great. It's a deep conversation about art vs. craft; the accidental brilliance born of limited resources; plus, the stories about how each of them discovered and became involved in heavy music in the first place.

We rank the first five Metallica albums and talk about all of the ways Warbringer has drawn inspiration from Metallica as the Neo-thrash survivors have created six well-received albums, including their latest, Weapons of Tomorrow.

Carlos is the former drummer for the band Hexen, filled in for his friends in Power Trip, and replaced the late Nick Menza in OHM, the instrumental rock/jazz fusion trio led by Chris Poland, the lead guitar player on the first two Megadeth albums.

    Biff Byford

SAXON. Metallica played their second and third shows ever, at the Whiskey A Go-Go, opening for Saxon. Lars Ulrich marked the 37th anniversary on Instagram, writing, "For us at the time, this was like winning the lottery. Not only was this our first Hollywood gig, but in the early 80s, Saxon were one of the biggest, most exciting & influential hard rock bands in the UK & Europe. All in all, an incredible night for ‘Tallica." Saxon vocalist Biff Byford talks about that legendary night in 1982; the metal scene of the early '80s; hanging out with Lars in 2007; performing "Motorcycle Man" with Metallica at the 30th anniversary shows; British humor; his 2019 heart attack; and his debut solo album, School of Hard Knocks.

Naked Six is the name of the band fronted by Biff's son, Seb.

Entertaining and Informative

Very good podcast. I like the wide range of guests and some of their backstories relating to both Metallica and the metal music scene. I’ve learned a lot and I haven’t even listened to all of the shows yet. Keep up the good work.

Great Podcast

I am listening today to your review of the S&M2 show you went to. My aunt who passed in 1998 was a harpist in the San Francisco orchestra in the late 70’s I believe and when I was starting a band in the 90’s she wanted to see the sheet music of the music I liked so I showed her the “music book” from Puppets. I will always remember that she told me that everything she saw in this book was equally arranged and flowed like a traditional classical piece.
It was around a year the first S&M came out and I remember watching the video from it and because my aunt played the harp in this same orchestra I wanted to see the harpist. If you look the dude had a colored mowhawk and a sleeveless tux with his tattoos showing if my 43 year old jäger memory serves myself correctly. I mention this because in the podcast you mentioned how you were wondering if any of the musicians listened to MetallicA. I am willing to bet that harpist did.
