3 Mindset Shifts to Help You Manage the Holiday Season

Does the month of December fill you with joy or stress? This month is full of excitement, but also full of dysregulation, disrupted routines, extra demands, and emotional overload for everyone involved.  In this episode, we’re kicking off the Surviving & Thriving in December series with three powerful mindset shifts that can help you navigate the season with more calm, more clarity, and a whole lot less pressure. As a special education teacher, I’ve lived through my share of over-the-top Decembers—trying to make it magical for my students, my coworkers, and my own family. And I learned the hard way that the magic happens when we let go, not when we pile more on.  Today’s episode walks you through three mindset shifts that will help you reclaim your peace and set a grounded tone for your classroom. In this episode, you'll learn: ✨ Mindset Shift #1: Ditch Perfectionism Why “done is better than perfect” matters now more than ever—and how letting go of unrealistic expectations can transform your December. ✨ Mindset Shift #2: Release the Guilt How guilt disguises itself as responsibility, and how to give yourself permission to say no, do less, and let “enough” be enough. ✨ Mindset Shift #3: Bring Down the Tone of the Holidays How lowering the emotional volume helps students regulate, paras feel less overwhelmed, and you maintain your sanity. Plus, I share a personal story about my daughter’s favorite Christmas memory—and why it had nothing to do with big plans or perfect decorations. ✨ Final Thought: Give Yourself the Gift of Grace A gentle reminder that you deserve compassion in this season just as much as anyone else. This episode is perfect for you if… Your students are extra dysregulated and you’re feeling the pressureYou’re tired of trying to “make December magical” for everyone but yourselfYou want practical, mindset-based strategies to keep your classroom groundedYou’re craving permission to simplify, slow down, and breatheSign up to be notified each time a new episode airs and get access to all the discounts!Don't forget to leave a review of the show! IEP Alignment in Action: A Case Study Walkthrough

We’ve spent all month talking about what it means to write strong, meaningful, and connected IEPs, and today, we’re putting it all together. In this final episode of the October series, I’m walking you through a real-time case study of a fictional student named Eric, a 5th grader with a Specific Learning Disability in reading and written expression. From the Present Levels of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance (PLAAFP) all the way to the services and accommodations, I’ll show you exactly what it looks like to build an IEP that’s aligned, defensible, and most importantly—student-centered. Too often, I see teachers going through the motions: writing each part of the IEP separately, just to check a box. But if your IEP was ever pulled for an audit or legal review, could you confidently defend that every section is clearly connected back to student needs and team input? In this episode, we’ll cover: ✅ What a well-written PLAAFP section should include ✅ How to pull out student strengths, clearly identify needs, and write an impact statement that matters using AI ✅ How to ensure your goals are tied directly to those needs and how to explain your “why” behind each one ✅ Why your services and accommodations need to flow logically from your goals ✅ The difference between an IEP that is compliant vs. one that is effective 📘 RESOURCE HIGHLIGHT:  To help you improve your PLAAFP statements, I’ve included my favorite tool:  👉 Say This, Not That: PLAAFP Statements for IEPs This resource features 179 well-written statements across 20 common areas. It’s perfect for improving the professionalism of your IEPs and helping parents, paras, and administrators understand the student more clearly. 🎧 So whether you're new to the field or a seasoned pro who just needs to see the connections in action—this episode is your blueprint. Let’s dig into Eric’s story and see what true IEP alignment looks like.
