    Split Your Head - Season 4 - Episode 59 - Interview with Lachlan Saille (Albatross)

    Warning: This episode features discussions about abuse and may be triggering to some. Discretion is advised. This episode I've got Australian filmmaker Lachlan Saille on to chat about his latest film, Albatross. While he might be on horror-heads radar for his restoration work, including New Wave Video's release of the lost 8mm Japanese horror flick, Nighty Night, his own films are a different beast altogether. Albatross is a very heavy drama about child abuse that focuses on these two lovers exploring their own complex traumas. It's one of the most unique films I've ever seen, applying a Bergman-esque poetic touch to very prickly subject matter. Lachlan is a fascinating artist who tied these themes to not just his creative pursuits but also his political ones. Amber T is a writer and news editor for Fangoria Magazine and Naomi has recently launched an exciting webzine called "Asian Cinema Shine", as well as the PinkCat Podcast (that covers Pink & CAT III films). They've both contributed essays to a number of recent and upcoming Japanese bluray releases, so naturally I had to have them on to discuss this ultra-provocative Asian subgenre. We specifically tackle Genji Nakamura's 1983 gay satire of Yukio Mishima's life called Beautiful Mystery, as well as Minoru Kunizawa's 2002 gay horror/romance, Two Lovers. Sam is one of the most prolific figures to rise up in this hyper-niche scene with many of his films pushing the envelope for hardcore sexuality and shocking gore. However, upon picking his brain, I found some of the most heartfelt and grounded answers to come from someone creating such disturbing content. His processes and methods showcase a high level of ethics and consideration, while he continuously challenges himself as an artist and a human being.     Split Your Head - Season 4 - Episode 52 - Interview with David M. Dawson (Zebra Hooves)

    This episode features the return of David Dawson, an Illinois based mumble-gore filmmaker whose penchant for juvenile antics and nuanced storytelling has made his oeuvre uncomfortably relatable... Just Like This Chat! Dawson dives head-first into his neuroses, revealing the body horror of his waking life and his grievances with the US medical system. This sets up his latest offering Zebra Hooves perfectly as it is his most personal and revealing film all about paranoia, illness, nostalgia, etc, with thankfully a dollop of catharsis. He also teases his next more comedic project in the vein of Fam-ILLI: a satirical examination of straight-edge culture. Hell yeah.
