Holy Thursday offers an opportunity to reflect not only on the mysteries of the liturgy, but on the message of unity, peace, and fraternal charity given through the institution of the Blessed Sacrament. Every Mass calls to mind the Last Supper. In the Mass of Holy Thursday, however, the inextricable link between Christ's love for us in the Eucharist and the liturgy is especially pronounced.

It is crucial for Catholics to not view their Faith as something purely exterior. Catholics cannot merely "go through the motions" or keep up certain appearances and consider themselves faithful followers of Christ. Rather, it is necessary for Catholics to cultivate a strong interior life connected to God at all times if we wish to attain eternal life.

The parable of the Good Shepherd instructs us on the mercy of God and the dignity of man. Contrary to the recent declaration Dignitas Infinita, a proper understanding of the parable reveals that our dignity emanates from our relationship with God and our conformity with His plan for us.

"Every best gift, and every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no change, nor shadow of alteration." These words from the Epistle of St. James remind us that we live only by the gifts of God and that it is incumbent upon us to continually ask Our Lord for them.

The baptism ceremony symbolizes both the tomb where we are buried and arise again with Christ, and our new birth in Christ. In both images we find the shedding of our old life--the life of sin--so that we may have eternal life with God in His heavenly kingdom.
