START is a medium for insightful discourse on the relevant issues concerning urban design, innovations in design and construction technologies, sustainability, and well-being in the built environment. It will spotlight our in-house architects and allied specialists from interior designers and engineers to landscape designers and environmentally sustainable consultants, as well as thought leaders; all of whom will provide perspectives on the what, why, and how we can design and build better and greener spaces today for a more delightful and liveable tomorrow.

    Reframing 'Assets' for Sustained Environmental, Social and Economic Value

    Delving into the inevitable business implications of asset enhancement and wider urban revitalisation in this episode of START, we speak with architects who have accumulated deep expertise in projects spanning Asset Enhancement Initiatives (AEI), Additions & Alterations (A&As) and adaptive reuse for the regeneration of value beyond numbers. Directors Tan Chee Kiang, Tan Chee Yong and Chua Zi Jun look on the evolution of the AEI landscape over the years, shared their experience in key projects such as Orchard Road, Marina Square, Shenton Way and House of Tan Yeok Nee. Noting how this particular scope of architectural work is no longer solely about design but also fundamentally anchored in business acumen, they explore: The crucial role of architects to ensure sustained environmental and social value of existing assets while responding to the needs of clients;The importance of retaining the physical markers of Singapore’s history – most easily apparent in our built assets – given the country’s context as both a young nation and land-scarce city-state;The need to refine and implement strategies for the revitalisation of old buildings for contemporary use, with minimal to zero demolition, across the whole ecosystem of Singapore’s built environment;The value of maintaining open and collaborative channels of sharing with agencies such as the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), which are avenues to advocate for positive change in policies and regulations.Looking ahead, our directors note that such AEI, A&A and adaptive reuse projects are, in fact, fitting for young architects to gain hands-on experience. Defined by constraints, these projects can help push creative problem-solving while also allowing young professionals to stand in the shoes of other key stakeholders, developing their skills in project management and code compliance. Offering honest perspectives into the pertinent issue of existing buildings and extending their lifecycle, this podcast invites both retrospection and anticipation of what is to come for Singapore’s built environment amidst land scarcity, business expectations and public good.
