Breaking the Silence: Shattering the Stigma Around Mental Health

Thirty years ago, talking about mental health—let alone suicide—was almost unheard of. It was whispered about, avoided, or met with uncomfortable silence. If you were struggling, you were told to "toughen up, push through it," or "keep it to yourself." Resources were limited, conversations were rare, and stigma was everywhere. But things have changed. Slowly, steadily, the walls of silence have started cracking. We’ve seen athletes, musicians, and everyday people share their struggles. We’ve built helplines, support networks, and safe spaces. But are we really talking about it enough? Are we asking the right questions? Are we listening? Today's guest is a well-known figure in the Grande Prairie community. Tom Pura has been a dedicated member of the Grande Prairie & District Chamber of Commerce since September 2008, currently serving as the Communications and Public Relations representative. Before his tenure at the Chamber, Tom worked as the Sports Director at Big Country 93.1 CJXX-FM radio from 1988 to 2008. Beyond his professional commitments, Tom is a passionate advocate for mental health initiatives, dedicating over 12 years to increasing awareness for the Resource Centre for Suicide Prevention and the Men at Risk Program, now known as Tough Enough To Talk About It. I sat down with Tom as he shared the deeply personal story of losing his father to suicide—an experience that profoundly shaped his mission to change the narrative around mental health. Through his journey, he has turned grief into purpose, challenging the stigma and advocating for open, honest conversations about suicide and mental well-being.

Honouring Hannah: A Journey Through Grief and Giving

The loss of a loved one is never easy, and when that loss comes under such heartbreaking circumstances, the journey through grief can feel especially heavy. But in the sorrow, many people find solace in creating something lasting, a testament to the love and memory shared. Hi, I'm your host, Cara Jones, and this is the Starting Conversations podcast, an initiative of the Resource Centre for Suicide Prevention, where we explore personal stories, expert insights, and practical advice to break the silence and stigma. Recently, I met with Ali Thebert from the Northwestern Alberta Foundation here in Grande Prairie, who shared some information on how their organization assists people who want to start a memorial foundation. When Andre and Tammy Ouellette were faced with the devastating loss of their daughter Hannah, they wanted to create something to honour her life while giving back to organizations like the Resource Centre for Suicide Prevention. We are so grateful to Andre and Tammy for sitting down with us and sharing their journey around setting up the Hannah Ouellette Memorial Foundation through NAF. Since starting the Memorial Fund, have you seen changes in society when it comes to talking about mental health and wellness? Have you seen things change at all? Or would you like to see more change? Join us in this heartfelt conversation as we explore their journey, the impact of their foundation, and the ongoing need for mental health resources and safe spaces for youth. Learn more about the Northwestern Alberta Foundation  If you or someone you love is struggling with mental health in Alberta, you can find resources on our website www.startingconversations.ca Together we can shift the narrative around mental health and end the stigma one conversation at a time.

The Power of Language: Shaping Mental Health Conversations

This podcast is created on the unceded territory of Treaty 8 and Métis District 13, lands that have been occupied, travelled and cared for by Indigenous peoples since time immemorial. As an organization, we recognize the past wrongdoings and systemic inequities faced by our Indigenous populations. We are committed to uplifting Indigenous voices, respecting traditional lands, and working together towards reconciliation and healing. Imagine a world where every word spoken to and about us affirms our humanity, respects our individuality and acknowledges our unique experiences. Hi, I'm your host, Cara Jones, and this is the Starting Conversations podcast, where we will explore topics around mental health, education, and suicide prevention. The Starting Conversations podcast is an initiative of the Resource Centre for Suicide Prevention and is located in northern Alberta with offices in Grand Prairie and Grimshaw. It's our vision to promote mental well-being, raise awareness, eliminate stigma, and provide educational resources to reduce suicide, suicide behaviours, and their impacts. When we use language, it can either empower or stigmatize. Person-centred language shifts the focus from labels and diagnosis to the person's lived experience, promoting a more compassionate and inclusive approach to mental health care. In today's episode, I'm speaking with Tammy Monro, Public Education and Outreach Director at the Resource Center for Suicide Prevention in Grande Prairie, Alberta. Tammy gives us a little insight into the differences between person-centered and identity-centered language. We discuss the importance of mindful language in mental health, the impact of stigmatizing words, and the evolving terminology around suicide. Join us as we delve into how changing our language can create a more supportive environment for everyone.
