    Bringing Identity into Science: How setting aside objectivity can be powerful to address modern issues

    In this episode, I share my personal journey and experiences with bias in science, and I talk about how objectivity isn't and shouldn't be the ideal. Drawing from my research and reflections, I discuss the ways in which science is personal, and how we can apply emotional ideas and identities to research. I introduce the concepts of post-colonialism, anti-capitalism, abolitionism, and intersectionality, and explain how these frameworks can help us better research and address the complex issues that face our society today. Using examples such as climate change and trans identities, I discuss the importance of incorporating politics and identity into scientific discussions. Join me as I introduce this complex and important topic, and share why examining identity and intersectionality in scientific research is crucial for creating a more just and equitable society.

    Welcome to the STEM with grace podcast!! In this first episode, I talk a bit about my background in research and science, what science communication is, why it matters, and what my hopes are for future episodes. I hope you enjoy! Correction: Lesley Northrop, PhD was the Clinical Molecular Genetics Laboratory Director for Fresenius Medical Care North America in NYC in December of 2015, after completing her postdoc at Columbia in July 2014. The lab she showed me was the Cancer Cytogenetics Lab at Columbia Medical run by her partner, supervisor and manager Chris Freeman.
