#16: STEM beyond the lab: The rise of Science Communication in the Philippines

Science communication continues to rise as more and more Filipinos see its relevance in our world today! When we know more about science, we also build trust and acceptance with it! We invited one of our resident science communicators, Kami Navarro, to talk to us today about the wonders of science communication! As the Scientific Writer and Editor at the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Synthetic Biology for Clinical & Technological Innovation, she spearheads the communications efforts of NUS’ focal synthetic biology research programme. Previously, she was the Science Editor of the Singapore-based Wildtype Media Group, where she managed the award-winning science and technology publication Asian Scientist Magazine. Prior to her stint at Wildtype Media Group, she helped pioneer a curriculum for Science and Risk Communication in the Philippines! She has also published an article and a book chapter on the state of Philippine science communication; both works are regularly cited and used by the local Department of Science and Technology in their outreach activities. #15: Math is here, there, and everywhere!

Whether you like it or not, math is everywhere! It plays a crucial role in understanding the world around us. Beyond finding your x and y, we now see its relevance in different fields such as art, baking, music, sports, and more. We invited Fattie Guerrero, the SHS Remedial Coordinator and Mathematics Supervisor at De La Salle Santiago Zobel School, to share with learners and educators why and how math is awesome! Rather than seeing the subject as another obstacle, she encourages her students to use math to challenge themselves to think critically when solving problems. With over 20 years of experience in teaching and education, she also recalls and celebrates her triumphs and challenges in helping students grow their appreciation for math! Cosmetic science has evolved over the past years. It’s not just about what makes you look good, but what is actually good for your skin, hair, nails, and more! The cosmetics industry is now moving toward a scientific future, putting STEM at the core of creating innovative products. In this episode, we invite power Filipinas, Christa Vidallo, a Senior Scientist, and Zei Reyes, Innovations Manager, from UL Skin Sciences Inc. to talk to us about the personal care industry, and the behind-the-scenes work that goes into creating different products! #13: Sports and STEM

Dr. Zeena Hernandez is a physical therapist specializing in treating orthopedic cases, functional fitness athletes, and Olympic weightlifters. She is also the PT of Filipina weightlifter and Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz! In this episode, she talks to us about how sports is now more than just a game of showing strength and agility, it is a science too. You can make learning connections behind shooting a basketball, identifying your angle and swing when hitting as golf ball, or even applying Newton's laws of motion when bowling. Doc Zeena received her undergrad from St. Paul University – Iloilo, Philippines and obtained her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Utica College. She has around 5 years of clinical experience, and was awarded the Physical Therapist of the Year (2018) by the Academy of Filipino-American Physical Therapists (AFAPT) for her contribution and commitment to service and excellence. Currently, she owns and leads Good Reps Physical Therapy located in the heart of Brooklyn, New York. #12: Food Science and Technology in the Philippines

Food scientists and technologists are responsible for the safe development and manufacturing of our food products and their processes. They have continuously helped improve the food that we consume today while ensuring safe consumption and preservation, making these food items more available! We invited Anna Tongco, a Food Scientist and a product developer with a background in food technology, to talk about the Food S&T environment in the Philippines. Anna is currently completing her master's degree in food safety from Michigan State University. Apart from being absolutely enamored by food and material science in general, she also enjoys writing, musical theater, and Filipino Martial Arts. #11: STEM for the better

STEM helps us in solving the challenges our world continues to face today. Over the years, these innovations and breakthroughs have saved so many lives and this somehow entices people who are passionate about their advocacies to use STEM for the better. We have invited Aldrin Gabuya, a Resident Astronomer and Observatory Staff at the Al Sadeem Astronomy Observatory in Abu Dhabi, UAE and Tin Millado, a recent Doctor of Agricultural Science graduate from Nagoya University! Check out how they’re using STEM to fulfill their advocacies, and at the same time, uplifting communities through science communication. #10: Why Choose a STEM Career

The pandemic has highlighted the importance of STEM, even more so STEM careers! It is said that the demand for STEM careers will not only increase in the future, but will also help contribute in solving challenges in our world. With this, students are urged to explore different careers in STEM and take on more opportunities. In this episode, we invited Dr. Denise Matias, a Research scientist in the research unit Biodiversity and People at ISOE, and Paul Tosoc, a Doctor of Philosophy in Biology graduate from the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, to talk to us about why they pursued a STEM career, how they fought their impostor syndromes, and how we can promote STEM careers to the youth!
