Sean Payton’s offensive identity: bait and switch - misdirection - let me trick you - confuse the defense - personnel and scheme you to death.
Mark Schlereth’s offensive identity hypocrisy: “Your offense needs to have an identity that you can fall back on when you need it”. What you really mean is your team has to have a basic (zone type) of running game you have practiced 1,000 times that your opponents have practiced against a couple of dozen times and can’t defend well. There is no way you mean that an identity is some form of passing game (ie quick slants, screens play action etc. ) Although play action can be a break off of the zone run identity.
Overall inquiry: Do you think Sean Payton after losing the championship game the way he did, will have the introspection to establish a core offense that includes the following.
- five offensive linemen working a zone scheme with a consistent QB, RB, FB/TE, and a second blocking/receiving TE. (Meaning consistent personnel who work together in unison)
And then from that identity work on variations and personnel changes to confuse defenses secondarily. Always knowing you can bounce back to the core identity at any crucial moment.
