April discusses team names and mascots, specifically names and mascots that are racist and that objectify a group of people, in this case Indigenous People.

    Learning is Consensual (Ep. 6)

    Learning is Consensual (Ep. 6)

In this episode we discuss three concepts for coaches to keep in mind when they coach. We remind people that sometimes learning is taking place, even if we're not aware of it. We speak about the fact that coaches shouldn't assume that athletes want coaching. We also remind coaches that they shouldn't try to read athletes' faces and body langue too much, because it can lead to false assumptions.

We give a shout out to the Rule Fifty Six upcoming Derby Stance Coaching Summit.

We also talk about the beauty and power of sport.

What Does it Mean to be Athletic? (Ep. 5)

What Does it Mean to be Athletic? (Ep. 5)

Have you put much thought into the words athlete, athletic and nonathletic? Given that the name of our podcast contains the word Athletic we have put a lot of thought into what it means to be an athlete. Something that stands out to Strong Athletic host Nadia Kean is that many people do not feel qualified to use the word athlete or athletic. In this episode we look at how the words are used, and what they actually mean. We discuss the words from both the perspective of a coach and an athlete. This is an especially good episode to listen to if you've always felt excluded from using the word athlete and you want to hear someone else's perspective on why you don't need anyone's permission to use the word athlete or athletic.

Your Core Values as an Athlete (Ep. 4)

Your Core Values as an Athlete (Ep. 4)

Have you ever thought about your Core Values as an Athlete? If not, we're going to focus on them in today's episode of the Strong Athletic Podcast. Core Values are your key beliefs in sports. Sometimes we're just playing sports and we don't really know why we're there, why we stay, or why we would leave. As athletes it's important for us to know this information, because it can be our "go to" when times get hard.

Great advice for non-athletes as well!

I’m a roller derby official and LOVE the advice Nadia gives. It’s great for reflecting on my goals in many areas of my life. Most people have a situation in their life where they are working on a “team” as an official, at work, while volunteering, etc. and listening to a podcast from an awesome human who has tons of experience working well on a team is a great investment of time.

Nadia is awesome

Thank you so much for this podcast. It really has helped my mindset as both a coach and athlete. Also it is very empowering to know that both as an athlete and coach that you are allowed to have conversations to figure out how to fix your issues.
