The Rewrite - Safe & Sound

The Rewrite Embrace the Backspace Description The Rewrite is a writing workshop podcast where our hosts, Sarah Holman, Thomas Grossi and Jared Graham each week critique a piece of writing from our listeners and peers. As students in the writing program at UVic, we are offering peer review and feedback using Liz Lerman’s Critical Response for all genres of writing. Our hosts look at what is working in a piece, respond to the writer’s questions, ask questions of our own, and offer opinions or suggestions. It’s tie to embrace the backspace and start rewriting! In our first episode we dive into the script “Safe and Sound” by Eric (Arie) Kwakernaak which has recently been shortlisted for the Annual Screencraft Screenplay Competition. The script is a drama with a hint of horror wherein 10 year old Zeke stumbles across an old safe that has the power to bring objects to life. Special thanks to our Audio Engineer and intro song writer, Michael John Lo for editing the podcast! Afterglow EPISODE 1 - Welcome To Afterglow

AFTERGLOW EPISODE 1 - Welcome to Afterglow Episode Length 26:15 --Podcast description-- The year is 21XX.  My name is Nova and I am running out of time. I was a freedom fighter trying to make a brighter future for everyone then it all went wrong. Now everything’s changed and with security forces on my tail, I make a mad dash through Vancouver, British Columbia hoping to find a new life… --Episode description-- Lost and alone in the rain, I take a chance on a neon sign and run into a small bar called Afterglow. Surprisingly enough, the drinks are served by humans instead of the standard bartending bots. What’s more, the enigmatic owner wants to hire me as the newest bartender. I’ve never made a drink before in my life but she seems to be able to keep me safe from security. What other choice do I have? Afterglow is a work of fiction. People and private locations featured in the story are all fictional. Any connection to real life  people or places is purely coincidence and is not intentional. The podcast was recorded in the COVID-19 pandemic. Recording was done online, which accounts for the variety in audio quality from actor to actor. We hope this will not distract you from the story. Afterglow contains language that might be offensive to some audiences. If you are easily offended, this program isn’t for you. Additionally, this episode contains moments of transphobia. --Time Codes-- (0:00) -- intro music (0:40) -- Welcome to Afterglow! Off Task Podcast - Uncut Yams And Adult Swim Bumps

Show Notes: If we’re spending all our time (free and unfree) in the TikTok vortex, we might as well talk about it. The Off Task podcast is here to put your wasted time to work and get you to think a little deeper about your favourite mode of procrastination: TikTok. Off Task is a bi-weekly podcast about TikTok. In each episode your hosts––Alyssa, Taha, and Joey––take listener requests to break down specific TikTok trends. Over the course of the discussion, we will summarize specific trends and dissect why they are trending in the first place. The goal is simple: to unpack the content from the fastest growing social media app and ask the tough questions about why something is trending and what it says about our culture more generally. On this episode, Alyssa, Taha, and Joey get into the weeds of the “Julia Fox Uncut Gems” trend as well as the “Adult Swim parody” trend. Some context for on “Julia Fox Uncut Gems”: In a recent interview on Alex Cooper’s podcast “Call Her Daddy,” actress Julia Fox discussed her relationship with ex-boyfriend Kanye West. When asked if she was West’s muse, Fox agreed and added that she’d had that position before when filming the 2019 crime thriller, Uncut Gems: “I was Josh Safdie’s muse when he wrote Uncut Gems.” However, the clip has blown up since TikTok creates began to the way that Fox said the film’s title – “Uncuh Jahmz.” **TikTok Links For “Uncut Gems”** The original “Uncut Gems” clip: https://bit.ly/3iVHXKt The parodies: https://bit.ly/3wCiOfB https://bit.ly/3uyNjR9 Context for “Adult Swim Parody”: Remember Cartoon Network's late-night programming block, Adult Swim? This block was a space for classic adult cartoons such as Family Guy, King Of The Hill, Robot Chicken, etc. If you watched the Adult Swim block, which aired from 8pm to 6am, then you'll remember their short commercial clips that featured an embedded “[as]” logo and aired between ad breaks and TV shows. Well, these clips are called “bumpers” or “bumps,” and TikTok creators have led us on a trip down memory lane with a new trend encouraging users to recreate or parody these bumpers! **TikTok Links For “Uncut Gems”** Adult Swim parodies we loved: https://bit.ly/3utn4LT https://bit.ly/36OOqDS Hosts: Alyssa Jackson is a student at the University of Victoria from Washington, USA.
