The conversation moves between art, culture, education, family, trauma, resilience and storytelling before arriving at an extraordinary story involving a cursed painting, a spear attack, spirit men and a fire that burned nearly 300,000 hectares of land. Some stories are difficult to tell. Some survive because they are told. This is a long conversation about the stories we carry — and what happens when those stories finally come back into the light. 🎙️ A long conversation. Slow culture. Creative resistance. StudioZer0 Beyond Survival S2 Ep21 | BREAKFAST IN BED @ KELLI’S | With Sue Callanan & Erika Batdorf

Welcome back to Breakfast in Bed @ Kelli’s, where conversations unfold slowly over tea, breakfast and shared curiosity. In this episode of StudioZer0 Beyond Survival, Geraldine and Kelli welcome the return of Australian installation artist Sue Callanan alongside internationally acclaimed Canadian performance artist Erika Batdorf for a rich conversation exploring visual art, curatorial practice, embodied performance and the evolving role of artists within an increasingly complex world. Beginning with Sue’s recent Melbourne exhibitions, the discussion explores how museums and galleries influence the way audiences experience artworks—from plinths and labels to the invisible decisions made by curators behind the scenes. The conversation naturally moves towards one of the art world’s most discussed events, the Venice Biennale and examines questions surrounding the Israeli and Russian pavilions, artistic freedom, activism and the growing relationship between art and geopolitics. Later, Erika Batdorf joins us to discuss her internationally respected Batdorf Technique, an innovative approach helping actors, dancers and performers access authentic emotional expression through interoception and embodied awareness. We also explore her theatre retreat in Canada, current creative projects and the possibility of bringing her work to Perth. This is a thoughtful conversation about creating meaningful work, building artistic communities across continents and finding ways for art to remain deeply human in an increasingly distracted world. 🌱 Enjoyed this episode? 🎬 Emu Runner (2018) — When Country Becomes a Way Through Grief

Emu Runner is one of those rare Australian films. Written and directed by Imogen Thomas, with Indigenous script consultant Frayne Barker, the film tells the story of Gem, a young Aboriginal girl navigating the loss of her mother. As grief reshapes her world, an emu appears, drawing her back towards Country, family and the knowledge that healing is not always found through words alone. Rather than explaining Indigenous spirituality, Emu Runner allows it to exist on its own terms. Country is not simply a landscape or backdrop—it is memory, relationship, responsibility and home. For those of us exploring art, culture and storytelling through Beyond Survival, the film raises questions worth sitting with: * How does culture carry us through grief? * What wisdom is held in Country that modern life often overlooks? * Can cinema become a bridge between different ways of understanding the world? * What happens when we listen before we interpret? These conversations matter because they remind us that stories are not only entertainment—they are living archives of identity, resilience and belonging. Emu Runner offers a gentle but powerful invitation to slow down, pay attention, and recognise that healing often begins by reconnecting with where we come from. Have you seen Emu Runner? We’d love to hear your reflections. 🎙️ Beyond Survival explores the intersection of art, spirit, culture and activism—where creativity becomes a conversation about the future rather than simply a record of the past.
